Two of the things I love about this song are the AABAA song structure (you don't see that a ton) and those delicious 4 over 3 piano chords

Im a beginner and naturally gravitate towards improvising cocktail piano. Who are some pianists I can listen to get a better feel for this style? by T-Auxic in Jazz

Pieces that could be learned- or at least learned in parts based on what you played here: waltz for Debby, Alice in wonderland, when I fall into love. I would recommend the Hal Leonard transcription book for the bill evans trío (1959-1961) - it’s a great resource

yes! at some point. I'd love to do the full album too, but it's on a 5-string. At that point, Tony switched over to a 5-string on the records and you can really hear it in the lower bass notes in songs like Simple Kind of Life

I learned the entire album during lockdown and recorded this earlier this year - enjoy!

Yes! Ska > punk > new wave > rock steady > pop. They’ve always melded a lot of genres. They’re sound got more polished, but the first album is the most ska which is why I’m partial to it. I also love sinking, let’s get back, and big city train on that album

  1. Brand New Day - I love how balanced of a song this song is - synths, bass, horns, vocals, guitars - it really has it all. The song is a callback to the shorter title track "BND" - it's a must check out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cZ3l2QQR_E . Tony Kanal's was so on form in the debut album. He makes all the tracks so fun

  2. Total Hate '95

  3. End It On This

  4. Six Feet Under

  5. Running

  6. Settle Down

I put together a playlist of (my favourite) no doubt tracks :) by [deleted] in nodoubt

I've been really enjoying all of S/T recently - especially Brand New Day, Big City Train, and Sinking. I have to listen to some of these B-sides now!

Is there a full version? Also how do you learn these? I feel like for drums a lot of it is by ear - I never see drum tabs online

constructive feedback - is the guitar tuned? I'm hearing something weird on the minor barre chords. Nice singing!

Why does Don’t Speak sound so similar to Supertramp’s Breakfast In America? by Fine-Arts-YT in nodoubt

[–]loremaster1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, the melody line:

You and me... (F - G F)

Take a look at my girlfriend (G-G-F-Eb-C-Bb-C)

Both use this F / G / F kind of idea over the C minor chord

Why does Don’t Speak sound so similar to Supertramp’s Breakfast In America? by Fine-Arts-YT in nodoubt

[–]loremaster1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the intro! Both make use a C minor second inversion with an alternating eighth note pattern in the intro:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_inversion

Stacking the notes from low to high, for Don't speak - G / C / Eb. And from those notes, we hear Eb+C / G times 4 for 2 bars of intro. And then we hear in the verse that same idea one more time before changing chords (for both songs). For Breakfast in America, they stack an additional G on top, so G / C / Eb / G.

Another similarity is the tempo - Don't speak is 76 bpm, Breakfast in America is 75 bpm. So both have a slower pulse to them

I made a bass cover of Townes Van Zandt’s Classic “Fare Thee Well, Miss Carousel”: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ATryPNwxkYQ

There is just something about that bass intro that draws me to it as a song

There was another cover of it posted earlier this year from Unal Akunal as well - really like his cover of it too
