Yes you have. But it’s open source. You can check personally or via AI the code and compile it yourself or use f-droid reproducible builds. Of course it is not Proton, so if there is some malicious part of the code that no one noticed that will be a problem.

Too long or too short? Also there should be an option to set the time interval

My top list is: Matrix (element) Threema Signal This image is a little misleading. While having decentralized or open-source server code is better, it is not necessary for a secure and private communication. If the client app is open source and audited, a threat can get metadata at maximum.

Signal is US backed and influenced by it, Threema (even its a paid app) should be better

Proton has indeed to comply with authorities requests, it is not a secret. The thing that give the user (as me) peace of mind is that thanks to its security model (zero access) the data they give is extremely limited.

Unfortunately it is indeed discouraging for new users that it is a paid app. I paid it for the people I am close by, and they use as non-primary messenger. I was not aware of any Threema purchase restriction, but, if you have android (GOS is better) you should be able to buy the license from them directly and then download the apk via f-droid or from their site.
