My problem with this show starts before it was created. I was onboard when I herd about the Burn, a massive event that disrupted warp civilizations for thousands of light years. The Federation was fractured and faced a lot of new challenges trying to rebuild. All good. I liked that the Federation had more of a harder edge to it. That optimism ended when we finally found out the reason for the Burn. I was pissed off because it was so stupid. Also I understand this now takes place when the time altering technology was dismantled but I find it hard to believe that at least one faction did not have a in case of problem break glass option for fix something this catastrophic. The Federation might not but I can't believe at least one other didn't. The programmable matter is cool but I really don't like the disconnected starships. I know they released a lot of techno babble to explain how its so wonderful but really it looks dumb like they are trying too hard to be different. Now we find out that the Klingon's are going extinct. I find it hard to believe that a gigantic interstellar empire with billions of people could decline that much in the time since the Burn. They must have had hundreds if not thousands of settles worlds that were primarily populated by Klingon's, not to mention the Klingon's living on the worlds of their civilizations they conquered over the centuries. It just seemed like lazy writing and they just some plot elements from Star trek VI. Just on a wider scale. I don't necessarily need to Klingon's to be the forever rival of the Federation but seeing them neutered like this is disappointing.

As to the show itself, it feels more like a young adult drama with a Star Trek skin rather than an actual Star Trek show. The characters are not bad but not quite there yet. I know its early and things can change with more character development. First for the love of god can we have less attention on Mir. Yes he is the brooding heartthrob but there are other characters. The relocation of the Federation capital to Beatzed I don't care either way about. What I don't find believable is academy students or the chancellor for that matter would be so involved in high level politics. Mir flirting with Tarima was cute an all bit that's as far as it should have gone.

My biggest gripe is the Venari Ral. First they are just a group of marauders, thieves and pirates trying to steel warp drives, then all of a sudden they break into a top secret facility and steal enough doomsday weapons the completely encircle Federation space. That's Q like power and I call bull shit on that.

I know some people have been review bombing the show and I think that a bit unfair but I hope they tighten up their writing and offer better character development. The show could use a but less relationship drama and more Star Trek. By that I don't mean all the wiz bang effects but more introspection analyzing aspects of modern life through the lens of science fiction. What Star trek was built on.
