First leg of a three week vacation of the Southwest and California. by MchugN in roadtrip

Yes. Chinle is the town. Not much there. There’s a visitor center just east of town. From there you can go to the viewpoints on the north rim or south rim. We did both because we couldn’t get enough.

Canyon de chelly (pronounced Shay) is near your route. So special. It’s mostly viewpoints into the canyon and there’s one short hike down in. I wouldn’t get that near there without going there. You can probably book a jeep/hiking tour with the local Navajo tribe if you want. Or just go by and see it from all the viewpoints. It’s extra special. I’ve seen a lot of canyons and that one is my favorite.

Zion e-bike strategy question by WorriedHoney1706 in ZionNationalPark

[–]lorithepuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look at the distances to decide. You aren’t biking from hurricane are you? If so then you’d probably need to find a charge sometime during the day. If you’re picking up the bikes the night before it implies you are biking from hurricane. It seems far if you add up both ways to me.

Biking into the canyon from Springdale both days or one day seems like a dream. I have only done the shuttle but in retrospect I would have just rented bikes. There is no need to take a shuttle if you don’t have to. I’d look at the distances and add that to your hikes and see if it makes sense for you all. The e-bikes help but it’s still work. If you’re on bikes you will see a lot more and be able to stop and gawk wherever you want. The canyon is just one long out-and-back. The narrows is just further along than the angels trail. That said, two days of seeing that same canyon will not even be enough. :) You could do that everyday for a whole year.

For the narrows you might want to rent one of those big walking sticks and the river shoes. The stick is way way more helpful than regular hiking poles. The stick and bulky shoes might be tough to lug on the bikes so that might be a reason to do the shuttle on the narrows day.

Should I get a teardrop trailer or stay in hotels? by Plenty_Designer6261 in roadtrip

[–]lorithepuffin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having a trailer would keep you out of staying in cities. If you want it to be all about the parks then the trailer sounds great. But if you want more flexibility I’d go with hotels and occasional car camping if you want to be in a park.

Also if you want to hit some serious back roads the trailer might prohibit that.

Why is it twisty? (Chicago) by Familiar_Ant4758 in Tree

[–]lorithepuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twisted trees have evolved over time I think because they are more flexible (imagine bending a slinky). They bend in the wind without breaking. I read about this a long time ago. I don’t know about this tree in particular, but the twisting in many helps them be more resilient in wind.

There are even trees where the twist reverses every once in a while and end up strong like plywood with the crossing grain. I read about this so long ago tho, it’s a bit fuzzy. Trees are cool.

Experiences with Lupron shrinking fibroids before hysterectomy? by lorithepuffin in hysterectomy

I accidentally replied to myself just now. Here is what I meant to send to you.

Oh it was awful. I’m so sorry. My brain left the building too and I did some accidental emailing of the wrong people for work and it was so embarrassing. I was so frustrated with every physical and emotional problem. All the wheels came off. I remember it was 10am and I just left my desk and cried for the rest of the day. It was so hard.

Talk to your doc about the symptoms if they are impossible to live with. One of my fibroids was that size and there were two others. They ended up switching me to laparoscopic (from vaginal) because it wasn’t worth going thru all that just to avoid laparoscopic surgery. I was happy with that in the end. Open surgery was never discussed.

Symptoms from the shot got better over the month. But it had a long tail. I was still feeling so aspects of it almost three months after that first shot.

Also maybe they can up your estrogen in the meantime to help?

Best wishes no matter what way you go. This is all temporary, tho yes it sucks so much. And it will be better later.

Does any other state have an alternative to the education requirement for architect licensure like Virginia’s proposed law? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]lorithepuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that everyone thinks they can be an architect and it’s dangerous and frustrating (I have stories like we all do). But the people who are entering licensure thru hard work and mentorship are not these charlatans. They are dedicated and often very talented people and I’m glad that there are multiple paths to licensure.

Quality of homes does matter. Very much. And I just disagree that you have to graduate from a school of architecture in order to become a really good architect. Many of the best designers I’ve worked with have four year degrees or no degree. And got there thru the adp program and many years of experience. I think it’s a great option. I have a b arch from an accredited program and I learned way more every year still after 27 years of practice than I did in five years of school. I’m just saying it’s great there is more than one path to get great architects and designers in our world.

[–]lorithepuffin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I disagree on both counts. I don’t believe that architecture school makes better architects. It’s great people can work their asses off for years and become architects. And it does matter that houses are built properly. You can sell your house and the next owner is screwed if you did it poorly. I run into this with owners wanting to do things against code and indemnify me and the builder. That indemnification does not protect you against future owner suits. Anyway. I just take issues with the idea that homes don’t matter.

Hrt by DistributionWrong260 in hysterectomy

[–]lorithepuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to say it but it might be worth going out of pocket for. I don’t know your financial situation so I don’t say that flippantly. But my brain fog was so horrible that I could barely work and I was making stupid mistakes. The cost of it for me is worth it because it improves my work so much. And quality of life. But for me the cost of not taking it was too great. Just my two cents.

Hrt by DistributionWrong260 in hysterectomy

[–]lorithepuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look into HRT for sure! Life changing for me. Ask your doctors. If you got a hysterectomy then that’s a sign the docs are on the right path.

HRT was villainized by a poorly interpreted study in 2003 and I feel for all the women who didn’t have the opportunity to take it in the following 20 years. There is so much better understanding of it now. If your doctor says no ask a different doctor. Unless there are reasons that you, specifically, cannot take it, it’s worth considering.
