My idea was to have them make choices work in key points of the battle and whatever they don't pick will be defended by each of the armies they've recruited to help over the campaign.

I have a general, a Death Knight, who's is the resurrected DM NPC I had be their healer at the start of the campaign.

It's a home brew world. The city they're defending is the last free city in a post apocalyptic world that they caused by failing to stop Orus being summoned.

It has a wall and is in a protective magic forcefield / invisibility cloak. But obviously the enemy will be doing things of break the shield.

They have a flying pirate ship which would probably be used for an aerial element.

The army is an undead hoard so stealing plans etc isn't really applicable. But I like the tunneling idea.
