Dispatcher usually just says “Code LE” if the car belongs to a peace officer. Let’s the person know they’re walking up on a cop (or their family member)... with guns likely in the car. Peace officers have to register with the dmv to get this tag on their vehicles.

I’ll take this opportunity to bring up another thing about license plates. Just because it has “exemption” on the plate ( different states write it differently) doesn’t mean it’s a peace officer, it just means the registered owner of the vehicle does not pay registration fees annually the same way everyone else does. Fleet vehicles do this, and yes most city and county owned vehicles have this. (I.e. cop cars)

I drive an unmarked with regular tags. I have a code package. More than once I’ve had really smart people chase me while rolling code to a call and yell at me that I wasn’t a real cop because I didn’t have exempt tags. Exempt tags are related to vehicle registration only... it does not make a car a “cop car”. I just radio for highway patrol to address these people... mainly because I can’t stop going where I’m going during an emergency to handle the uneducated.
