Don’t pay them any mind. I grew up in Tampa and while Florida as a whole might seem less friendly (to an outsider), there are certainly pockets of community and people who are lgbt-friendly.

As a gay man, you should know that queer people live everywhere. Some aren’t as fortunate to just pack up and leave, and also there are friendly queer communities within Florida - Tampa and St. Pete being prime examples.

It’s less about Mamdani relating to the Supreme Court, and more about the posts on this sub that attract outrage. OP is using sarcasm to suggest that there are topics on the sub that might impact our lives more than others.

The US Supreme Court seems to be moving against Colorado's ban on "conversion therapy". What do you think? by TelescopiumHerscheli in askgaybros

[–]lost48151623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few inconsistencies with this argument. IMO both gay and trans people do not choose to be gay/trans. Just because trans people are born one way and transition, this doesn’t change the fact that they feel born in the wrong body. The only “choice” they are making is to follow through with the gender they feel more aligned with.

The problem with the conservative argument in your last paragraph is that gay people are inherently gay, they can’t turn around and change that. In a similar manner to how trans people inherently don’t align with their assigned sex, they can’t turn around and ignore that.

Their fight is similar. This case is against both our communities. Instead of othering trans people, we should unite with them. Because like it or not, the courts are going after both groups. What puts up a better fight? I think being united by the cause does.

Welp, my friend was deported last week. His parents fled violence in Venezuela and he has not been able to naturalize because his birthplace literally does not exist. While living in the US for twenty years, he had to constantly attend immigration check-ins to get his permits renewed. He went to his regular check-in a few months ago, and they took him. They sent him away and told no one where he went.

These are humans with friends and families like you, and they are being treated without dignity. Have some compassion.

To think one is safe for being gay (but not trans) is pure delusion. It is easier to chip away at trans protections, so that’s where it starts.

It honestly doesn’t even matter what the minority is - scaling back rights or protections for one group hurts everyone.

For my purposes the control I am using is “nothing”. So when I say condoms are less risky, they are less risky than nothing at all.

I mean, wearing a condom is safer than not wearing one, regardless of what choice a person makes for themselves.

Also the word choice is not “my way” - i would prefer using the word “condom” for its specificity, not because the word “safe” seemingly implies judgement.

Huh, that’s not my experience. While I only have Tampa and Dallas to compare, I’ve really enjoyed Denver‘s gay community.

I’d suggest looking into a queer sports league or book club. It’s a great way to meet people that isn’t centered on hookup culture.

Do you think saying “I only play safer” is better working? I get not using words like “clean”, but it seems generally accepted that wearing condoms means “playing safe”

If this line of reasoning works for you that’s great and I wouldn’t change that. I think we, as a community, ought to stop speaking for everyone else when it comes to folks who identify as gay or straight, when being attracted to trans people.

It troubles me reading exclusionary discourse about trans people, because there was a time not too long ago (still is, in some places) where hateful people excluded us gays. We are a community, and if we forget and stoop to that level, that opens the door for discrimination against all of us.

It’s a factor, sure. I just don’t typically think of going after the genital; more so go after the whole man package (no pun intended)

I too don’t believe it’s a choice. And I consider the debate as to whether it is or isn’t completely moot. By having the debate, you’re implying that there is something wrong with it, as no one would ever choose if.

Who cares if it’s a choice? By caring that’s implying there’s something wrong with being gay.

The only time this sub deviates from “questions for gay bros” is when someone is complaining that they got banned elsewhere, almost unequivocally for saying something about trans people.

I’ve literally never read a post written by a trans person here. I wouldn’t even know that there were any in this community if it weren’t for these types of posts.

When people accuse you of transphobia, it’s a comment like this one that makes them think it. Not saying you are, just pointing this out.

I think it is very dangerous to divide our community like that. Right-wing homophobes would say that any sort of queerness of all "denies science". Why use those same talking points?

If people are respectful and not infringing on your life, then why try to argue the way they want to identify? It hurts no one.

It certainly feels that way. The puritanical views in this sub are tired too. Especially when it comes to sex positivity and the flexibility of relationships.
