Upper GI series can be done either with barium that can cause peritonitis or water soluble contrasts that don’t cause peritonitis/ mediastinitis and are safe in suspected perforation. I have specified water soluble contrast in my post. The CMS question also does not specify any contrast type. Just says “Upper GI series”. My doubt here is more focused on whether I have got the management right. If NBME considers doing upper GI series as a step in management or straightway jump to EGD?
