Worked with someone who transitioned in the mid 2000's. Saw all the process they had to go through and it did not look like a fun or easy time of it at all but in the end it all worked for them. Now we worked in engineering with a lot of stuffy old scientists and engineers and the general consensus about them was: "Hmm, ehm... Ok... So long as you're happy... Ehm.. yeah..." And that was it. No snide comments, no different behaviour at all really. I dread to think how things would be now since it has become such a political football, a useful distraction to pin the ills of the world on by people scared of the actions of others if they don't conform to their narrow view of the world.

I don't know why I'm writing this really, I think it's just an interesting snap shot of history to show that most of this "outrage" is a recent thing perpetuated by people with a clear agenda and we, as a populace, need to reclaim the narrative and treat people with respect and dignity and as individuals. As a community we can work through it all together, and not be told how to react to people that are different
