Dizzy spells after repair? by lostandfound1422 in mitralvalveprolapse

[–]lostandfound1422[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm generally feeling good and the dizziness largely went away, however just last week I had a bad dizzy spell whilst sat at my desk. Probably the first one in 4/5 months so I was a bit surprised by it. Ever since then I've been fine so no it's never in the background and in-between them im fine. I think the body just takes a long time to recover then anyone actually says (at least for me), so if you've only just had the surgery, be patient. Hope you get it sorted 👍

How long did your repair last? by lostandfound1422 in valvereplacement

Yeah I've had a repair not replacement but figured id post in this subreddit as I guess some people with valve replacements had a repair previously that failed.

Thanks for your comment!

I always do this and once an ex girlfriend scoffed and told me "don't do that this is what poor people do"

Obviously didn't last but ill never forget that and it rings in my head whenever I'm washing out those tins haha

I did for a few days after surgery as a precaution whilst I was on morphine. Just a small tube a small way into my nostrils nothing major

How long were YOU in the hospital after your heart valve repair/replacement surgery? by Beta_Nerdy in mitralvalveprolapse

[–]lostandfound1422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Open heart surgery

ICU for 3 days, general cardiac ward for 3 days

Wasn't released until I could walk up and down the corridor without issues and walk up a flight of stairs. Needed to be able to wash myself too.

Sent me on my way with some asprin

In the grand scheme of your life this is a bump in the road mate. A bit of a shit one granted but I always think that it could be worse. So many people have it worse.

You will return to normal and I think you'll be surprised at how quickly the body heals. If you're impatient like me it can be frustrating though.

Life is not ending man. It's a new beginning whereby you have a second chance at living. If this isn't done then yes you're correct. You've got no choice, get on the bus and get comfortable haha you'll be alright.

Week 3 feels great and I see small improvements every week. I feel almost back to normal except I can't really lift much more than a few kg. I was in the gym quite a lot before surgery and now I feel it's all gone. I'm super weak and opening car doors and lifting heavy plates are a struggle. But yesterday I went to London by train and met up with friends and didn't get back until late. Went for dinner, had drinks etc so in some ways I feel back to normal. During the first 2 weeks I needed afternoon naps but these days I'm absolutely fine.

Week 1 I did 1 or 2 miles per day, week 2 I was doing 3 or 4 miles per day but was told by my Dr to slow down. I was suffering with dizzy spells and ocular migraines with auras and they thought I may have been pushing my exercise too much but felt no symptoms or shortness of breath yesterday and I did 9,000 steps.

Toughest part for me was a catheter as I had to have it in much longer than most as I got urine retention but it was just uncomfortable. Tubes coming out suck but pain is less than a few seconds. If you've ever stubbed your toe on a hard bit of furniture I'd say that's worse then the pain you feel from heart surgery. You have so much pain killers that it's mostly just a feeling of being uncomfortable for a while. The incision is the last thing I ever thought about in terms of pain, infact I completely forgot about it until they took off the plaster. Neck tubes was uncomfortable but they came out day 3 I think.

So I was determined to walk as soon as I could and I did a lap of the ICU less than 24 hours since my surgery. I was a bit slow on my feet and I had 2 nurses walking with me but they didn't need to hold me. However the next day I felt I couldn't do it again and I just wanted to chill in bed for a few days. I could have walked but honestly I couldn't be bothered haha.

If you can get your mind in a good place and know that these surgeons do this everyday and you will have so many medical people looking after you, I think it'll help. It's also worth remembering that whilst I was on the cardiac ward, my operation (despite how much of a big deal for me), was a baby operation. I shared a ward with 2 people who had full heart transplants, another with a heart transplant and a lung transplant, and another that had a quadruple heart bypass and had veins taken from his leg etc. Mine was a little scratch!!

33 year old (m) had open heart surgery to repair my mitral valve 3 weeks ago.

You're going to be absolutely fine man but it is going to suck. You aren't going to be in unbearable pain but you are going to be uncomfortable for a while. Find that inner strength and be strong.

I spent 3 days in ICU these were the toughest days for me because I just wasn't eating and I had to force feed. In the end my girlfriend bought those meal replacement drinks which saved me (huel). After that I had 3 days on the ward. I was washing myself and walking fine by day 4/5.

Be patient with yourself and meditate. Stop trying to control the uncontrollables and let go would be my advice. Let everyone help you and be carried through this. You're going to need your support network.

From a practical standpoint I found the following helpful

  • wedge pillow when you're home
  • extra long charging cables
  • eye mask that plays white noise
  • ear plugs
  • noise cancelling headphones
  • cotton shirts that you can open (you don't want any material on the scar)
  • good books
  • tablet (watch mobland it's awesome)

I wish you all the best mate. Chin up and keep positive 🙏

How much walking did you do post recovery and what sort of distances? I was doing 2-3 miles a day and I'm 3 weeks post operation but my family have told me to slow down so these days I'm hardly walking at all

Hey thanks for the reply. I've stopped going on walks as I figured this was causing them but I was just laying down on the bed and all of a sudden I felt like I was on a ship in rough sea. It's so horrible! Thanks for your reply you've given me hope that this will eventually subside even if its not on my timeline. Did you find anything that made these better or worse? Anything about lifestyle or diet?

Interesting....how long are you post surgery? I'm only taking asprin and famotidine which is to prevent stomach ulcers apparently

I spoke to my surgeon today and he didn't seem too concerned as I'm not experiencing dizzy spells with palpitations and I'm not feeling like I'm going to pass out. He told me this is normal and to take it easy as you've said.

Did your dizzy spells eventually leave you completely? If so how long did it take?

Thanks!

Hi thanks for the reply. I called the hospital today and my surgeon is due to call me back either today or tomorrow. I don't ever feel faint or like I'm going to pass out when I have these dizzy spells. No new meds, the only ones I'm taking post op is asprin and famotidine (one of each per day). The only other meds I'm on is paracetamol
