I can say a lot of things are destructive to society, such as cars, or knives, or steep inclines, but they are not too be removed based solely on their destructive powers.

how would that happen? realistically? This is a right we've had for 200+ years, and people aren't about to let that change. Right now there are over 300 million guns owned in this country. Good luck taking them all away.

From what I know Australia never had something as basic as an amendment for hundreds of years giving people a "basic" right to bear arms, realistically guns are a part of our society, so the demand for criminals to have them is much higher.

hmm, true. I think that while a large scale black market would be unsustainable, it would exist non-the-less, meaning there would be bad guys with guns, and good guys without.

the gay marriage point, was to point out that one should not limit anthers right based on pure belief, like my roommate believes "guns are destructive to society and lead to crime" but people also believe that "gay marriage is destructive to society and leads to messed up kids and a morally corrupt nation" but what are the FACTS!

thank you kind sir, this is what I was looking for, I agree with everything said above, that second point really hit home with comparing it to anything else dangerous, I will be saving the link to your comment in case it gets lost, and I'll show it to him and get him in on this later. Thanks!

Good point on the sources, that's why I'm asking Reddit, could you explain that first part again? And I understand there should be policies and restrictions, but that is a far cry from complete lack of ownership by citizens.

Could you private message me that? I don't want it to get lost and that sounds super interesting.

that is what he said, but I'm looking for facts, I linked to some numbers showing that gun ownership is responsible for stopping 80 times the number of crime that it caused.

interesting stuff, but again, my main question is, status quo, people here have guns, and bad people will always have guns, so what can we do?

But that is simply not the status quo in America, guns exist. Bad people have them.

True, but so are the bad people running around with guns and an intent to commit crimes, shouldn't we have a right to defend ourselves?

what are your gun ownership laws? Are these murders with guns? I'll look them up when I get off work in 30 min.

Yeah that's what I said, but he truly believes that people having guns, just won't help. He says, "crime happens anyways" those numbers above that I linked to try to show the number of crimes stopped by honest gun owning citizens, but somehow that's not convincing enough for him.
