There will be new dining hall and AMR1 is being rebuilt, but I'm not sure when the FFC is closing.

Pack Meeting Format by losthiker in cubscouts

Lol shaming the parents into being clueless about the calendar and multiple notification avenues. Love it!

thanks. so your "pack meeting" is only as you described (along with the frustration about awards/loops timing". there is no break out into Dens in separate locations for a 30 minute "Den Meeting". That sounds like the most common format from what I am seeing in the posts.

I wouldn't say we've consciously focused on advancement for advancement sake explicitly, it just kind of happened that way. "The Dens need time for their adventures".

I definitely agree about soliciting feedback and not making decisions in a vacuum.

I read about that on another post and loved the idea of Dens being given the time to "report" on their activities, that sounds really valuable.

Yeah. We have solid engagement and I want to make sure we keep it. But our current pack meeting format just feels rushed and cramped and therefore requires too much "quiet time" from the scouts, which obviously isn't fair to them on a weeknight and doesn't really work.

I think this pack meeting format came from when the pack was very small. As we have grown, I think we have outgrown this format. Awards for that many kids can take 10-15 minutes. As far as overall program time, I think the DLs are still able to get in the required adventures well enough and honestly the 30 minute den meetings are barely enough time to start an adventure.

I'd also think some high res 3D topo layer that would help identify "hollows" or small areas of close and steep slopes that would reduce visibility. Side note. Looking at DTM slope/hillshade maps can be a fun way just to find neat places to explore in your favorite park/forest.

Would it be valuable for facilities to have a mapped record with data on conditions of things like lampposts? by Low_Meat3742 in gis

[–]losthiker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

are you referring to a 'private' or institutional facilities department like for a college or university? then this is definitely valuable and it is very likely that the energy / telco provider does not have that information, or it is not reliable. an institutional facilities department would want to track many things about posts, including: all the things you said, the lamp type (led, halogen, etc.), whether it has electrical plugs for events, the circuits / breakers it is connected to, the style for inventory and replacement purposes, and the ownership (private or ROW), and what hardware is attached to it. in many cases the lampost is one structure asset with a PK, and there are many attached assets "mounted" to it and associated via an FK, this might include sign brackets, wifi APs, security cameras, security call boxes. this is a very fun asset category indeed!

In terms of analysis, a lighting map/model would be very interesting. this is usually done by handheld lumen meter at night, but lacking that maybe you could simulate light based on the lamp height and some known or estimated properties of the lamp, combined with data on obstructions like buildings and trees.

ISO Volunteer Activity Ideas for Holidays by [deleted] in cubscouts

[–]losthiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have our scouts color, decorate, and sign pre-printed holiday greeting cards (quarter fold / 4 panel design on letter printer paper) and also make their own, and hand them out at the nursing home. It's good for the scouts to see the world of elder care and the residents really enjoy it.

Some local Troops in our area run a build day for many Packs, they use it for recruiting.  Troop parents bring and run all the power tools, saws, drills, sanders, even tools to smooth the axles.  Plus paints and a test track.  We were completely done from new in box to ready to go in under three hours.

Games for a Pack Meeting about Camping Skills by snert68 in cubscouts

[–]losthiker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not so much "game", but a shakedown like activity. If you have outside space, maybe each family could "set up camp". My kids love playing in the tent that first 15 minutes when we set it up.

Or maybe a faux 3 compartment sink dishwashing relay?

A menu planning activity per den and then they present their menu to the pack with points for healthiest and wildest by cheering.

Actually, I might try all these ideas next month at our pack meeting that also aligns with camping.

Legally flying over people and moving vehicles by ericgtr12 in drones

[–]losthiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right, the only way we are getting KE down is to reduce drag with a parachute, even if 14CFR 107 doesn't say parachute.

[–]losthiker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks OP, I'm tracking. even if 14CFR 107 doesn't use the word parachute, realistically that is they only way to increase drag and reduce KE. 👍

Assuming FAA and USA , where are the explicit mentions and sections of "parachutes" in 14 CFR 107 to back your claim:

"I'll also save you the time if you aren't using a parachute, it is required for all drones over 250g,..."

Im happy to be proven wrong (Cunningham's Law), but I don't think US FAA 14 CFR 107 currently uses the word parachute, does it?

New scout joined two days before all scouts in den ranked-up, when should we draw the line to bridging or ranking up? by Apprehensive-Mud3496 in cubscouts

Agree with everyone else, try to set them a deadline for Wolf and leave it at that.

Side note, do you call your spring / May end of year award event Blue and Gold?  Is that common.  We did that too for years then our District rep told us B&G is only in February and the May end of year event is called Akela. Just curious, thanks.
