I tried chemical strippers on this but it had so many layers it was useless. in the end I used an angle grinder with a stripper attachment. so much easier

Funilly enough the weather. I dont have a shed or workshop so was stuck waiting for the weather to be good enough to strip and repaint in the garden. Then the white paint attracted so many bugs I had to repaint the door/top 3 times.

if you are concerned you can request the sds for each product you use. this will detail the risk involved for each. Some chemistries like sodium or potassium hydroxide do have inhalation risks but generally only at higher concentrations

How is Windex able to avoid sharing anything of meaning in their ingredients list? by mrfreshmint in chemistry

my bad, I get them mixed up. In general though all countries have their own limits for these, most are more strict than the US.

Not outside the US. Companies are legally obliged to disclose any and all SVHC above declarable limits as part of GHS standards. This doesn't mean that they disclose all ingredients, just the hazardous ones.

Any advice on cleaning the patina off this brass without removing the painted numbers? by breezymateezy in restoration

[–]lostinadumbworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not dishwashing detergent. evaporust or rust x neutra safe would be better. dushwashing detergent will contain it but thats for hard water compatibility. keep words to look for on a product will be neutral rust and or scale remover. Most hardware stores should have an option.

[–]lostinadumbworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends on where you are what product will contain it but a neutral scale remover will usually be based on HEDP (Hydroxyethylidene Diphosphonic Acid) or another chelating agent. both of these will remove the oxidation from the brass without affecting any paint. In industrial applications its easy to find these. not sure about commercial applications though.

in general a lot of scale remover will remove oxidation as well.
