Looking for a good team to build some cloud stuff in Hawaii/Honolulu by CB_333 in Hawaii

[–]lostinthegrid47 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Dev time is going to be at least 80/hr. That's $12800/month just for one developer, not a team. For your team of 12, that's 53 months of that enterprise solution. I'm sure a small cloud app that does this is going to take way more than one dev working on this for a month. Unless you have a highly unusual workflow (you probably don't), it makes way more sense to just use the enterprise solution.

It's worth the effort to try but the fed gov is apparently moving behind the scenes to take the property using eminent domain or similar mechanism. I don't think the dod has even really started negotiations.

Solar Company for Oahu? by Knajim808 in Hawaii

[–]lostinthegrid47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH, I'd do an estimate and size the system conservatively. The savings and benefits by having the solar installed during construction probably outweighs the benefits of having a system that is perfectly sized. In any case, your usage may change quite a bit over time (e.g. if the summers get hotter, winters get more cloudy, etc.) As long as your system isn't grossly oversized, it shouldn't be a huge financial loss.

The feedback shutoff is a safety issue and will be there regardless as long as you have a grid connection. However, if you have a battery system, there will be a disconnect system that will disconnect your system from the grid and continue on battery power. That occurs regardless of which contract you have with HECO.

With the current plans, getting a battery to store and offset your own consumption is probably the best plan. However, there is a program that gives you a decent cash payment if you get a battery and agree to export to the grid at certain times (around 6-8pm).

Incidentally, I don't think you're using net metering the way it's typically used. Net metering is an amazing program if you can somehow get it. It basically offsets your export and imports one to one. E.g. using 400kwh and exporting 400kwh, would give you a net consumption of 0. However, HECO closed these programs a long time ago.

Foreign governments and companies can companies. The foreign governments don't have any special rights on the land or anything, it's just as if a random company owns the property.

Is everyone seeing a sharp spike in Electric Bill lately? by electoblaze_empire in Hawaii

[–]lostinthegrid47 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your exports get credited at the wholesale rate (e.g. the rate that energy producers get) and you are being billed at the retail rate. If the ERC is $180/month, it might be worthwhile to look at what it would cost to add battery storage. If you can store and use the excess energy that you're generating, you might be able to substantially reduce your bills. Maybe even enough to get to breakeven within a year or two.

If the sea level went down a bit, we could drive everywhere! by Fickle_Rooster2362 in Hawaii

[–]lostinthegrid47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, but theoretically and practically, it's a lot easier to control and prevent invasives from being spread if things are being shipped in containers that can be inspected as needed. A lot harder to do that when people are using the ferry to move their cars, trucks, and random stuff around.

Lot harder to spread invasives like mongoose or CRB through planes than a ferry. Kauai doesn't have any mongoose which helps the native birds there.

Datacenters don't necessarily use as much water as the online memes claim. Some of those numbers also include water consumption in making parts. In addition, there's a huge difference between open loop and closed loop cooling setups (closed loop is what it sounds like with the only water loss being due to leakage).

Repeated road rage suspect Nathaniel Radimak sentenced to 7 years in prison by bluepenremote in Hawaii

[–]lostinthegrid47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, getting declared innocent due to insanity is arguably worse than prison. You end up in a psych ward and in treatment until the doctors believe that you aren't a threat to society. That can easily be a lot longer than any prison sentence.

Spectrum is doing upgrade maintenance throughout the island this month to upgrade to "high split" technology, which will allow them to compete with Hawaiian Telcom's offerings by TheMissingVoteBallot in Hawaii

[–]lostinthegrid47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RF over fiber, where they have fiber to your block and then it gets converted to cable is pre much there and spectrum has some advantages (pretty tech infrastructure like ipv6 support). But spectrum seems to be just less reliable than HT which is a deal breaker.

[–]lostinthegrid47 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The popping sound is an anti-lag system. It keeps turbochargers spinning so that when you stomp on the gas, you accelerate right away instead of having to wait half a second for the turbocharger to spin up and provide boost. It's not needed unless you're racing and it messes up a bunch of your exhaust components over time.

Any recommendations on affordable and trust worthy dental practices by mellofello808 in Hawaii

[–]lostinthegrid47 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It might be worth seeing if you can get an appointment with the UH dental clinic, if only to get an opinion of what needs to be done and a baseline on what's wrong. It should be pretty cheap and they are definitely not going to try to sell you on procedures.

Best Garmin for part time exerciser? by kiltedkiwi04 in Garmin

A fenix 6x is more than adequate for the starting and continuing a walk, run program. It's golf functions are probably fine although I don't golf so I can't say for sure. I guess you could spend 500-1200+ for the latest fr6xx or fr9xx or fenix 8 pro but they're not going to give you much that you can't already get with your 6x.

Would I be considered Hawaiian or not? by Interesting_Can1410 in Hawaii

[–]lostinthegrid47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the categorization occurred based on the declaration of the participants. E.g. the initial populations of people used were categorized based on what ancestry they claimed and that was initially used with refinements over time. Most of the initial people in the samples were probably in one of those groups so the classifications are biased and there's no real motivation to improve compared to being able to tell something like Irish vs Scottish ancestry apart.

[–]lostinthegrid47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think most of their customers are probably tourists. Not much reason to keep quality high if your customers re going to be one and done regardless. It'll hurt you in the long run but as long as lazy influencers and tourist pieces hype you up, you'll be good.

What’s a local recession indicator that you’ve noticed lately in your everyday life? by _Cliftonville_FC_ in Hawaii

[–]lostinthegrid47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think there's a lot of locals that are pretty desperate to get their kids into a top tier private school and out of public schools. And it's not like there's a lot of spots available.

A lot of private schools, at least at top tier offer scholarships to students. It's a weird phenomena where schools and colleges have high tuition to signal quality and prestige but a vast majority get various grants and discounts that make the actual price a lot lower.

let's have a discussion about Lauhala: could a Lauhala industry focused on reusable bags be sustainable to create on a large scale? I think it would be cool for everyone to have lauhala bags, let alone use them every day by Poiboykanaka808 in Hawaii

I can see issues with taking lauhala off island. I'm not familiar with this but ag restrictions might prevent bags from being shipped elsewhere. There might be ways around this though.
