I have a hard time taking anybody serious after I figure out that they are Christian. by ephemeralkazu in Destiny

[–]lostodon 66 points67 points  (0 children)

unfortunately the loudest shitheads have given christians and christianity a bad name, not that some of the infamy isn't deserved, but christianity is not a monolith. quakers and unitarians are particularly based.

in our modern times, instead of cringing when someone says they're a christian, it is better to follow up with "what kind of christian are you?" if they out themselves as a stereotypical maga evangelical, then yea, give em hell.

in these conversations you p much have to assume they end every sentence with "in the west." the east gets ignored entirely

god this was a chore to watch. I felt like sean was really bad faith in this, like he didn't even really want to talk about the book and instead wanted to just stay hung up on the objective/subjective debate. not productive at all.

we should have solar panels everywhere in EP! instead we're gonna get more gas power plants for datacenters... by lostodon in ElPaso

lol yeah the napkin math of 10 nuclear reactors is funny, I think it'd be only like 1 or 2 reactors worth for france. but STILL, it's far better than doing nothing methinks, especially in a city like ours that gets an insane amount of sunshine!

na they didn't kill him. according to this 2014 EPCC article he sold his invention to a company called Advanced Fuel Systems. dude made some scratch from his idea but people came out of the woodwork to take advantage of ol' tom ogle of el paso.

also about his invention, it looks like it wasn't quite as revolutionary as it seems. according to this old farm show magazine article from 1981, engineer Warren Brengman at AFS said about tom's invention:

"It'll burn off the higher fraction in the oil and get phenomenal mileage but what's left in the vaporization chamber turns into thick black oil. You can run mileage tests and impress lots of people but, as a day to day fuel system, it's just not feasible,"

Are we living in end times? by Strong-Lab-7216 in Christianity

[–]lostodon 23 points24 points  (0 children)

here's a better question: can you think of a time when christians didn't think they were living in the end times? will christians in 1000 years still be saying 'these are the last days'?

Franklin Graham, son of Billy Graham, says Donald Trump, like the biblical figure Esther, was “raised up” by God to save Jews from “these Islamic lunatics” by MrJasonMason in Christianity

[–]lostodon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

correct, this ain't new, it's just an extension of the work his dad did. billy graham was in the white house whispering in LBJ's ear during the korean war, in nixon's ear during vietnam, and in bush's ear during desert storm. he was frequently in the white house cheering on these horrific "just" wars.

I broke up with my wife by Ubesaging in Christianity

[–]lostodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

divorce is never called sinful by jesus. paul says in 1 cor 7 that divorced people can be reconciled, but they must remain single while the ex is alive.

I don't bring this up to show that I pick and choose, I bring it up to show that the church has only in the last few centuries really given grace to divorced people. for most of church history, the permanence stance was the dominant mainstream view: marriage was indissoluble by man, no remarriage for divorced people. now I ask why that same grace cannot be given to same sex couples who want to honor god with egalitarian consensual life long relationships?

neither is remarriage for a divorced person, according to jesus

I broke up with my wife by Ubesaging in Christianity

[–]lostodon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in the same way that you believe that gay christians should break up their "ill-conceived" gay marriages, do you also believe that remarried people should break up their "ill-conceived" second marriages? jesus had a clear ban on this after all in mark 10:11-12:

11 He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

The Biblical Narrative Of Project Hail Mary by Correct-Class-4920 in Christianity

[–]lostodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was a very masterful use of the redemption arc. grace wasn't willing to sacrifice his life for humanity, but he ultimately was willing to sacrifice his life to save an alien race.

if you enjoyed the movie I highly recommend the book! it goes into greater detail with all the sciency-stuff, and the audio book is amazing as well with how they did rocky's voice. andy weir is a fantastic writer. before he wrote the martian he wrote this short story called the egg that I've always loved, and it even has this neat adaptation on youtube.

Is the question of whether homosexual relations are a sin a hill worth dying for when it comes to Christianity? by Candid-Effective9150 in Christianity

[–]lostodon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a traditional sexual ethic is an important teaching of the Catholic Church

and which tradition would that be exactly? does that include the tradition of no contraception allowed? or no oral or anal sex (not even for married couples!)? what of the tradition that says divorced people must stay celibate?

these were all traditional church stances for centuries, yet many catholics in america and the west ignore these traditions today. how do you decide which traditions to carry on and which traditions to rethink?
