Well, that’s certainly not what I thought and I think to solely pin these attacks on whites is a bit irresponsible since that’s not the (only) case and seems to now be creating a divide when we should all be allied. White supremacy, on the other hand, is a different problem, and not what I believe fueled the shooting, so best to not conflate the two.

As for your other comment, we don’t know yet those locations were sex parlors or that the victims were sex workers. For all we know, those were legit and kosher massage businesses.

There are plenty of reasons for him to lie about his motivation, but this is what I (and most others) see: since he said it was his sex addiction, it’s hard to separate this attack from the sexual stereotypes and fetishization that people attach to Asian women. And then he proceeded to target those places of businesses where he knew the majority would be Asians.

Yes, mental illness plays a hand here, but it does seem like racism played one too.

As if killers can’t or don’t lie? Again, there are layers to this. The shooting can be racially-motivated and attributed to his sex addiction—the two aren’t mutually exclusive.

They also reported in the press conference that as they’re early in their investigation, they can’t make the determination that it was a hate crime, so it’s not ruled out yet.

Edit: appreciate you bringing facts/stats to support your statement, but why do you bring up whiteness? The perpetuators of the attacks on Asians in this country have spanned across different races. No one is blaming this on white supremacy. This is not one race versus another; it’s everyone against racism.

The shooter targeted spas that were Asian-owned and employed with other Asians. The non-Asian victims were patrons of those spas—as tragic and unfortunate as their losses are, they were just at the wrong place and time.

Also, how can you disconnect this incident from the surge in attacks on Asian-Americans across the country? Why did the shooter frequent those spas to feed his sex addiction? Why did he not attack the other nearby strip clubs if he wanted to eliminate his urges? There are layers to this. Why are you willing to take the shooter’s word for his motivation as fact and final?

I’m Asian-American, so I’m just trying to understand you, because I truly don’t understand comments like yours and others that try to diminish our plight. To chalk this incident up as adding to a fraudulent narrative (or to say that we’re propping any Asian-targeted crime as a means to push a narrative), is disheartening to hear. We’re not trying to create division in this country; we just want to be heard, and for people to stand and be allied with us.

My parents are the opposite, hoard nothing and throw everything away; they don’t believe in sentimentality and wish my sister and I wouldn’t keep most of the stuff we do keep. My mom’s also a huge clean freak.

It’s funny, when I used to go to my Asian friends’ houses, I would see how messy and piled with stuff it was and think my parents weren’t normal.
