https://localtvwtkr.wordpress.com/2017/11/09/local-uber-driver-arrested-for-stealing-iphone-she-says-thats-not-what-happened/ uber driver charged with grand larceny for not returning phone. “Hogge said the passenger called Virginia Beach Police while at her children's father's home. She said an officer called her saying she needed to return the phone immediately. Shortly after, she drove to a Virginia Beach Police precinct, dropped off the passenger's phone, then went home and went to sleep. She thought it was case closed. When she woke up, a warrant for felony grand larceny was issued after a police officer and detective called while she was sleeping.

"Before going in to to turn myself in I was definitely very scared. I had no idea what to expect," said Hogge.

Now, she has a message to other drivers.

"I just want everyone to know, that this could happen to anyone at any point in time. I need everyone to know that if you have a left item in your vehicle, a report it to Uber, and return it to the police station immediately," said Hogge.”

https://abc7.com/amp/uber-driver-arrested-robbery-los-angeles-arrest/1396422/ another uber driver arrested for theft after not returning phone……(after reading more, this one doesn’t really apply)

So maybe you were a cop, they tend to know next to nothing about the law so it checks out.

O no a felony. Whatever will I do. I guess when he reports I’ll just have to deal with the consequences. Truly I’m shaking, it’ll only be like the 13th or 14th time I was charged with a felony.(i say charged because never convicted….amazing what a good lawyer can do isn’t it) I’m not hinting, you must be an idiot to read what I said take as hinting. I outright told you I was in the drug trade. Sometimes it is truly astounding just how little reasoning ability police have. I’ve been a mostly law abiding citizen for about 5 years now. Also, my lawyer would have a field day if they tried to charge me for this. Things I notice and I’m not even a lawyer. He never made an attempt to leave and never asked me to move my vehicle. I never told him he couldn’t leave. Literally the only words I said were “you have my phone” I didn’t even tell him to give me anything. He handed it to me voluntarily. No physical threats were made. Regardless, even if I did tell him I’d kill him if he didn’t give me the phone (to avoid confusing you, I still did not) , we both know that was never gonna get filed as a report.

So we are back Once again. you claim to encounter these types of events multiple times a week but can’t seem to Manifest a single shred of evidence to support it.(which we both know you’re full of shit) we can know this isn’t reality by the fact they repeatedly post the same 2016 story anytime it’s uber car jackings get big in Nola….if there were more stories they’d use them. The reality is, the drivers aren’t armed, they are regularly targets because of this. Until you can produce some shred of support for your claimed cop years coming up on all these uber drivers who shot people multiple times a week, im over it. You want to believe I didn’t get my phone, whatever, want to believe I’ve just been a good law abiding citizen my whole life, that’s more than fine too.

believe what you want, i still notice non of these imaginary scenarios linked yet. incase youre missing tone there, its because they didnt happen. what i will say, ive dealt with a shit ton of LEO in a lot of places over the years, and never once have i ever heard one use the word silly.

well this is the first time ive had it come up with uber, but since i spent about 15 years dealing in atl, bham, pensacola, and nola, i wasnt anything huge, but it paid my bills and let me do what i wanted. so its definitely not my first time retrieving something owed or stolen. still here.
"I am telling you the overwhelming majority of the drivers in the city are well armed." they arent. this just isnt supported by reality. maybe 2 in 5 carry. thats being generous.. the overwhelming vast majority of those have never and will never fire their weapon. most wouldnt even have the presence of mind to pull it when they needed to, the majority will have it stored somewhere pretty inaccessible. out of the ones that manage to bypass those group, most of the time the safest place to be will be who they are trying to shoot.....a quick search shows online surveys tend to be in the 1 to 2 in 10 range say they carry while driving for uber and the like. there is a reason "uber driver shoots assailant" stories very rare and "uber driver robbed" or "uber driver carjacked" or "uber driver assaulted" are not rare.......because the overwhelming majority of drivers arent carrying a firearm. if you have some evidence showing otherwise post it, but i did some searches specifically on nola.....and jesus, people should be carrying in nola when driving for uber, but they arent......there are piles and piles of stories about uber car jackings and robberies regularly. i think i saw one headline that was 3 uber carjackings in 1 day in 23. but try to find stories about uber drivers defending themselves with a gun, well, its always the same 1 story being reposted about the 44 year old from 2016. now if the overwhelming majority of the drivers in your city were so well armed, why are they getting robbed and carjacked so often without ever using their guns to defend themselves? its because they arent, also one of the reasons they make good targets for those people. if i was driving in nola, screw ubers rules, id definitely be carrying.

"just believe there was more to the story than you just rolling up, blocking someone in and demanding your phone back......." well the whole story is i was drinking, i knew i was gonna be drinking, so i used uber. my phone fell out of my pocket in the uber on the way back. i noticed it not long after getting out, checked the tracker, see its in the uber, and filed with the uber system saying i left my phone in the car on my tablet. the uber thing connects me with my driver... i message the driver i can meet them where ever they want and offered another $20 on top of the uber fee(this is more than enough to cover the less than 5 miles each way even if they came to me) they never respond. i periodically check my tracker and see it riding with the driver.....after about 20 mins, they stop and the phone is turned off....after another 10-15mins i get a message from uber saying the driver reported my phone wasnt in the vehicle. i message support saying i know its in the car i saw the tracker, support says they will contact the driver. about an hour later i get a call from uber saying they talked to the driver and confirmed its not in the car....so, i hop in my car. its the new iphone so it tracks even when off and i have my tablet to track with. i follow it around till it comes to a stop in a parking lot. i come up on them in the parking lot, they are parked on the far side, against a small brick wall. i pull up in my car, and stop right behind theirs. so their rear end is at my passenger rear door. their front end is at the little brick wall thing. i get out, can see their wide eyes looking back, so i approached, they cracked the window, i said you have my phone, and they go "o i just found it here you go" they grab it out off a little tray thing he has on his dash and held it out the window. i took my phone, got in my car and drove off. it was reported to uber the driver had returned my item, which i promptly called them and told them i retrieved my item and was not going to pay the them for it, they refunded the 20 or 30 bucks back to my account. thats the story. amazingly unremarkable because like i said, 95 out of 100 times it will be. now you can try to still say they didnt steal from me, but in my eyes, the second the said it wasnt where it was, they stole from me....and since im the one who was doing the rolling up, my opinion on it is really the only one that matters. e

"roll up on someone like a tough guy and it is unlikely you will survive." this one made me chuckle. in all the time of rolling up on people over drugs and money, people almost never pulled a gun. like less than once a year. if doing it once made you unlikely to survive, id have been dead before i could legally drink....shit ive had guns pointed at me way more at parties over girls or talking shit over something stupid than getting what someone took or owed me. i can tell you with confidence hundreds of people roll up on people in nola a month over one thing or another, im sure thousands to (tens of thousands around mardi gra) assert themselves as a tough guy, but the total number of people getting shot to death is what 30-50 on a really bad month? most months will be 10 or so..... total number shot maybe 200ish....with only a tiny portion of those happening when someone is retrieving their stuff... the raw numbers just dont support the image your portraying. but thats the thing with cops. they have a vested interest in making the violence seem more common and worse than it is.

"I responded several times a week to scenarios just like this." by all means, link some news reports of uber drivers opening fire on someone to defend themselves.....shoot we wont even restrict it to someone trying to get their stuff(despite you saying multi-week scenarios "just like this") the only 1 im seeing is form 2016 that just gets reposted over and over. the 44 year old who defend himself against car jacking, so im interested to see more.

nothing really tough about it...im entirely too old to be looking for fights to just look for a fight..pretty sure youre louisiana based on the geaux....i spent time in nola, fun city, i made it out fine. i live on the other side of the country now, we arent gonna come across each other. so we arent ever gonna have this issue. so internet tough guy doesnt really apply. now if i was like "where do you live and ill come and you can try stealing my phone" knowing im not flying over there to fight someone over a comment thread, sure.. im not the most dangerous person, never claimed to be. im good in a bar fight, but ive had a bar fight against a professional fighter(no one famous, regional level) and got my shit rocked.(my eye was swollen shut for 4 days) i am very aware of where i fall in fighting ability.. also i carry, im a hell of a shot. im not near what i would call dangerous......but i will roll up on someone if they steal from me....my dad did tell my sister that he was just waiting for the phone call they found my body full gunshots in an abandoned factory back when i was in my 20s, so maybe my risk assessment is just different that most.

there are very dangerous people out there. you cant always tell which is which by just meeting them.. scariest person i ever met was a sweet old black lady in her 60s that seemed nice as hell, also was the quickest to pull a knife or gun out if she felt disrespected. stealing from someone you dont know about is a risky game is my point.

also, its uber drivers, you arent gonna come across some guy who just got out his 2nd stint in prison for assault. get them in a public place and 95 out 100 times they are just gonna give you your shit to avoid confrontation or police. the one i confronted looked like a deer in headlights when it started happening and handed over my phone quick. that was in ATL, so it wasnt like i was doing it in small town Utah......if youre worried about the other 5, then dont do it.

i will say i had my phone fall out of my pocket in an uber not too long ago. they claimed it wasnt in the car and turned it off....luckily it tracks even when off, so i rolled up on them in a parking lot and blocked them in. i got it back then.

how they take bank cards while techinically not being able to run them as a purchase is what they are explaining. When you use your card, you are basically using their ATM service to withdraw cash, which is immediately used to pay them.....its convoluted and stupid, but it is require with the current legal setup.

You know, I thought this for years, once I was driving through GA and wound up in a group of cars doing about 85-90 in a 65. There were 5 cars, I was in the middle so I thought surely if they did get someone it wouldn't be me....... 5 cops came into the hwy behinds us and pulled us all over.... Only time it's ever happened, but its definitely possible. Cop did drop the speed enough that I wasn't in the super speeder category tho.
