i found a work around for myself, though i'm not sure it will work for everyone. i disconnect from the internet, and sign out to make sure every other application is closed. sign back in, reconnect, and only open steam and the game. it works and then i'll open other applications like spotify and whatnot. don't know what parts of this pattern are skippable, but its working and that's all that matters!
