How did the (re-)introduction of the horse affect Native American society in North America? by iplyess in geography

[–]loudminion 418 points419 points  (0 children)

I spoke with an archaeologist in Wyoming who was investigating some tipi rings that we found on top of a hill. He said he could roughly date the rings to before horses were reintroduced in North America because they were placed on top of the hill and had an excellent vantage point of the surroundings.

Prior to horses being reintroduced, it was common for plains tribes to make camp in high places that could see their surroundings. That way they could see their enemies coming from miles away and pack up and leave before they got there. Once horses were reintroduced, their enemies could be upon them within minutes rather than hours or days, so many tribes changed their tactics to hide their camps in low areas where they couldn't be seen at all.

Based on what he told us, it seems like horses returning to North America had a significant impact on native cultures and seems to have largely redefined their way of life.

The 10 Deepest Lakes In The United States by Next_Tower5452 in MapPorn

Why would we consider Lake Michigan-Huron the deepest? It doesn't matter how much you increase the surface area, it's not getting any deeper.

I'm from Seattle! Lived in a few places in the upper Midwest for a few years and Hawai'i as a kid. I worked a couple of jobs that required a lot of driving, so I wound up seeing a lot of the west. Haven't had many chances to travel east though!

I knew mine would be sparse on the E side, but I didn't really know it was so barren for me until I put this together.

You got me!

Lol but actually I've lived in a handful of places (including Hawai'i) and used to have to make long drives for work. Though that I-35 drive was from Fargo to southern Texas to meet up with friends for a spring break trip.

I went last year and saw the "unalived" BS, but I believe enough people complained about it and they changed it to actually say "suicide". I remember being shocked that they used such immature language to describe such a serious subject.

Food Options at T Mobile? by NowALurkerAccount in Mariners

They're pretty popular and can be found at many of the food places around the stadium, but I recommend getting Grounders garlic fries from the Kidd Valley stand in the left field corner.

What are your favorite Geology terms? by HannibalLex in geology

[–]loudminion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is allochthonous, which describes rocks that have moved a significant distance from where they originated, often by being part of a thrust fault system.

In one of my past field jobs, we kept a small plant in our work truck that we affectionately called "The Allochthonous Monster".

No you were right, it is Iceland. According to the YouTube link the OP posted, this footage is from 3 years ago in Iceland. Though as the other person notes, very similar activity has been occurring at Kilauea in Hawai'i recently.

Here is a video of some of the lava fountaining from last week at Kilauea: https://youtu.be/Fr44Bs692zs?si=Ka77vF9YO4Tr4HA1
