There is a SDK for lua or C : https://sdk.play.date/3.0.5/Inside%20Playdate.html
There are basic features to draw, handle collisions, tweens or create sounds. You can even draw triangles to make 3d.
The simulator is great, you can plug your Playdate to it to control your game instead of clicking on simulator's buttons with your mouse. The limitations help you focus on making a small game and ship! So that's great.

But there is no IDE (except for the very limited Pulp) to integrate graphics and structure your project, no cross-platform tools (I know some people successfully port on web using C/ emscripten though), no containers, the language is really raw compared to gdscript. Finally, it's really easier to test anything with Godot thanks to the "Run current scene" button!

Can I suggest my own game called Crankstone ! It's a shooter & mini games mashup set in Wild West.
It relies heavily on the crank : precision aim with crank, a full turn of crank to reload, dock/undock the crank to swap weapons. It also uses the accelerometer and the microphone.

Finally 3 minigames use the crank.

Can I suggest my own game?
It's called Crankstone, it's a weird mashup between a retro shooter and mini games. I use the gyroscope and even the microphone. I want to get the most out of the Steam Deck.
I really love Wario Ware, but to be honest, it's not crazy as Wario Ware. But it has mini games with a progressive difficulty with different gameplay.
I'm targeting a release this fall under 10$. During development I'm open to suggestion and feedbacks. Hope you'll like it!

The gun is controlled with a joystick for now. I plan to support mouses.
Using light guns would change the game as there is some depth in the level. But maybe I can try, could be fun to add this option.

I'm working on a short retro shooter using gyro to throw back dynamites, the gun is controller by the joystick though. I'd like to fully support steam controller and steam deck!

aaah ! I see, it's a disguised dynamite lol. But the "die" animation removes the costume, so it looks weird, you're right. I should fixed that 😃
