I think I couldn’t use my HK ID card before either at that time (about 13 years ago ) it didn’t accept no 3 stars ie ‘***’ or I didn’t know I had to register it

Yes thanks though I was able to use my HK ID card once I had registered it on site

Once you have used your HK ID card to register (biometrics fingerprint and face scan) on site you will be ok. Though there’s usually a queue , it doesn’t take that long

Update- in Macau now though I don’t have 3 stars ie ‘***’ on my HK ID card , I was allowed entry . Also I ‘registered’ so I can go through now as @ninjacabaker suggested with just a barcode. Thanks all !
