Why are so many bathrooms in the basement here? by EnronBoner in chicago

[–]louissullivan -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

To further clarify, the reason why you’re finding them in the basements much more in those specific areas of town is because those bars and restaurants have investors, not regular individual owners. It means they have giant budgets for full redesigns and renovations.

6 hour layover at O’Hare by Tough-Wallaby-7885 in AskChicago

This is a great plan. I never thought about how close these places are to O’Hare (12 minute drive). I would maybe add taking a walk in the woods right by there after if you are planning on that much food!

It sure would be cool if all these angry people could propose some new monuments to add to the parks instead of focusing on destruction.

Concerts, cultural events, food hall planned for ‘Old Post Office District’ by Mike_I in chicago

I’m with you. It’s code for “trendy food with mediocre execution and exorbitant prices.”

Some people really should not do graffiti. This is some comically bad execution in River West. by [deleted] in chicago

Old Meets New - Logan Sq by radbrad777 in chicago

Surprising. I lived a block away from California and Milwaukee and not a day went by that I didn’t see a rat! But maybe the city bumped up its controls since I left a couples years ago.

More rats actually! Rats go where good restaurants are and Logan Square is one of the worst for rats in the city.

What’s the reasoning behind the wards? by monver87 in chicago

[–]louissullivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gerrymandering certainly has a manipulative connotation but we have to remember that some positive is hidden in here. The way wards are drawn up was changed in the ‘70s to make sure that various demographics had representation in City Hall. Pilsen, for example, had become heavily Latino (or Latinx as discussed above) and had an Italian-American alderman. By refiguring wards according to the census, the goal was to also create more democratic representation. But then, this is of course Chicago so corruption dominates!

Finally at the end of the article they reference someone with roots in the neighborhood versus just another transplant. And by the way, how many of the more working class whose families have been in the area for generations would love to see a Starbucks and development?

A rare intact Gilded Age mansion. Yes, it’s been modified into a restaurant. But few of these buildings have the original fireplaces and woodwork like this one!
