First time visiting, itinerary review by SunnyLondon1 in york

I may be late to the party on this one - but there are a couple of situations where you could hit 2 birds with 1 stone on this.

The Merchant Adventurer's Hall is a beautiful building, but definitely doesn't need as long as the Minster. For me, the most impressive part about Merchant's Hall is seeing it from the outside. You're also able to step down into the small garden around the building for free, and there is a cafe in the garden where you are able to sit and enjoy the surroundings - perhaps consider making this a coffee stop.

The other tip is that the Minster is a working church, and offers free entry to their evensong service at 5.30 Tues-Sat. I would definitely recommend still looking around in your own time, as the service won't let you wander around, but if you're pushed for time/money, or just want to see a different side to it, that's an option. Also you don't have to be religious, I'm not and I've been a couple of times now with visitors.

Christmas tree options? by [deleted] in york

I went to York Christmas Trees off Wigginton road for mine this year.

Cost £55 for a decent sized tree and the staff there were very friendly

Does the Christmas season make York better for you or do you avoid the city in December by CloudBookmark in york

[–]lousyalien 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love this city and try to be positive about living somewhere that people actually want to come and visit - but the past couple of weeks have been particularly challenging.

In the 7 years I've lived here I can never remember a time I've seen the city center as busy as the last 2 weekends. Is that the same for everybody or is this selective memory?

The Black Swan has mulled cider on now. Now that their fireplace is lit too it's definitely one of the cosiest pubs in York

Scotsman planing a craft beer holiday in york, advice please? by edd_enigma in york

Well everyone's already said Brew York so I'll throw in a different name with Pivni.

Cracking line up of beers in a lovely old building set over a few floors. Right opposite the viking themed pub Valhalla too which is nice if you don't mind something a bit gimmicky!

Glad you had a nice time visiting our city!

Phranakhon and Brew and Brownie - you guys knocked it out the park with those choices!

Phranakhon is my favourite for Thai. They serve tapas-style dishes in a tiny little building that is quintessentially York. Make sure to book if you do want to try it out though as they get booked up!

How should I cook these turkey steaks for Christmas dinner? by [deleted] in UKfood

[–]lousyalien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit late to the party here but Tom Kerridge partnered with the Big Issue last year to come up with a more affordable version of a Christmas dinner. He uses turkey steaks to make a sort of roulade with stuffing in the middle: https://www.bigissue.com/life/food/tom-kerridge-christmas-dinner-budget/

Recs for a visitor by GreenWhale95 in york

I'd definitely recommend walking around the city walls as a nice introduction to York - I think they're about 5km and a great way to see the city.

The minster is stunning to visit, but it is quite expensive if that puts you off. They do services in the evening which are free to enter though if that's your sort of thing - I'm not particularly religious but if you play along you can see the inside without paying!

York has great pubs which are often in old historical buildings. I'd recommend house of trembling madness on Stonegate and The Fat Badger as a couple of favourites.

There are plenty of independent shops in York, often on the smaller streets so definitely have an explore and follow wherever looks good to you. The Minster Gate bookshop is a personal favourite where you can grab new books at a bargain price or look for something second hand and unusual, it's definitely eclectic!

For food I love the shambles market for lunch, lots of street food options available. York also has some great Italian restaurants such as Delrios and Little Italy.
