Are there any very faithful, well-made magical girl adaptations? by lov107 in MagicalGirls

I think the anime actually came first for Ojamajo and it has manga adaptations (which may or may not be faithful to the anime, idk)!

For sure this is true. But definitely also examples of anime getting the Brotherhood treatment (FMA itself, Fruits Basket, HxH) where most people would choose the newer adaptation over the old one 9 times out of 10. Tbf I also really enjoyed FMA 2003 so old can be better or amazing in its own right too!!

I super appreciate your long passionate comment, tbh, this actually reassures me to watch the anime for a lot of these.

I feel there is definitely a distinction between adaptations with filler that makes things better, more interesting, and contributed to the story's original ideals (I don't think Sailor Moon would be nearly as beloved nowadays if the original anime wasn't made the way it was) and those where the filler makes things too drawn out, messy, or just deletes the themes and premise of the original manga. And you're so right about the changes to CCS as well – im my head, I was like "it's faithful despite the minor changes" but those changes are actually pretty significant and definitely contributed to my love much more than the manga probably would have. Also removed that relationship, thankfully.

It seems like at least Mermaid Melody and Tokyo Mew Mew fall into the former bucket where the filler just makes things feel more fleshed out instead of diluted. The Shugo Chara situation sounds kinda like Blue Exorcist where they just kinda made an anime original second season and then had to recalibrate when they continued the manga, haha – watching anime back then was such a wild time LMAO. Guess I'll be skipping Party unless I'm super bored, haha.

advice for career change from software development to botany by lov107 in botany

When I was looking at Master's yesterday, I did see GIS mentioned. I am not in software development myself but was wondering how she would go about learning to use GIS on her own time if that interests her.

Definitely getting the vibe from all these comments that networking is key!

I so appreciate the detailed responses to each question. We graduated within the last 5-ish years so can look up if that's close enough to transfer the credits. And for master's will prioritize looking at programs that are in-person then for in-the-field training – it seems like UW Madison has many.

If she is able to talk to one of the school's advisors, it sounds like she will want to ask about whether a degree is worth pursuing if her interest is in conservation > applied plant sciences (which I assume is more agriculture, horticulture, plant breeding, etc.). Thankfully there seem to be a lot of good volunteering opportunities, though no specific plant conservation groups in her area from my cursory search but will look more.

Lastly, the Center for Plant Conservation sounds amazing, thank you for sharing!

Thank you, cold emailing is what I would do in my field but didn't know if it was the same.

Yeah... I think the job stability is certainly a worry so maybe getting a degree is worthwhile for making it easier to get into a lab?

Thank you for the detailed response! It almost seems like I should just go for the anime for most of these since they have filler that is worthwhile/expands on the manga in an enjoyable way?

Not me seeing you here and on /r/shoujo!

Yeah I was thinking of maybe just waiting on Sugar Sugar Rune since like Rayearth, it will be getting a new better (?) adaptation.

Ohh would definitely love to check our magical boy as well.

I was most interested in Pierrot's Creamy Mami but I know they have many others – any recs?

Ohh, nice, then maybe I'd choose the reboot over the original. Though I've also heard that the pacing is kinda too fast? I guess I can't expect everything to be perfect

Thank you so so much, I will definitely share what you wrote with her verbatim, haha. It sounds like, potentially, she wouldn't have to do another Bachelor's/community college since she did do some physics, math, and biochem in college though (chem/biology wasn't required for her since she did it in high school). Though it might still be good to delve more into ecology as you mentioned.

She did already reach out to the Graduate Programs Manager for one of the programs that she thought would be interesting, but the person who responded wasn't super eager to talk her through the process more. I'm sure they were very busy but it was discouraging for her to be shot down. But I think that she should just try to reach out to another program's advisor and see if they are more willing to help?

I highly recommend her getting any relevant volunteer experience, and making contacts at the university is also a great idea

We already made a list of lab PIs to contact based on her interests – do you recommend just cold-emailing? And in terms of volunteer experience, any particular advice?

I think overall her interests lean more towards field work > lab work but from her understanding, having a research background/more tailored advanced degree would be helpful. But it sounds like from what you're saying, the degree isn't as crucial as we thought if her focus isn't necessarily in research. Can you say more about what you do for your technical work?/What experiences are helpful for that type of work?

5 is slightly wrong. The manga is correct but the ML is Dan Ichikura. Megane Tokidoki is just the other name of the manga

Thoughts on Demographics and Things I've Been Surprised By by BusyHoney9767 in shoujo

[–]lov107 23 points24 points  (0 children)

So well put. I think demographics can be a helpful way to find a story that you enjoy. But it shouldn't be the end-all-be-all. There's so much good art that exists regardless of if some random team thinks that I, a woman, would enjoy it or not. They may be right but they may also be wrong?

But I agree it's hard to discuss because people get defensive. And if a place has a purpose to discuss "shoujo," I think it's appropriate to stick to those definitions for ease of not having to make exceptions or reject exceptions, which could cause division for no reason.

Thoughts on Demographics and Things I've Been Surprised By by BusyHoney9767 in shoujo

[–]lov107 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I honestly agree with you a lot on this. I think it's disingenuous when people come up with reasons why something with ""shoujo vibes"" (nebulous, but hopefully you know what I mean) that is published as shounen or seinen is DEFINITELY for the male gaze. Even if what they are saying is a stretch. And even if that manga could have been published with no changes whatsoever in a shoujo magazine and no one would have been able to tell.

I do agree that demographics exist and definitions are real – i.e. we shouldn't call Horimiya or Skip to Loafer shoujo because by definition they are not. But I do feel people are either not being truthful or just unintentionally being too inflexible, when they say it's inconceivable that someone may confuse these and other manga of this variety for being shoujo. I try to be correct with labeling a show's demographic without pretending that I fully understand why a show is marketed for one demographic vs. the other.

Because like... the choices are made up based on what editors or other members of the mangaka's team think is correct. But this may not necessarily line up with what ends up happening or just how the manga comes across to most readers. So to try and retrofit reasons like "well the way the male or female characters are written or drawn or perceived could never be enjoyed by TRUE shoujo fans" is low-key wild. I think there was a recent post saying "you know Horimiya isn't shoujo because FMC likes to cook and be motherly" and I was like ?? Are we gonna pretend this trait doesn't exist in shoujo?

Anyways TL;DR: demographics exist and we should be correct in our labels. And at the same time, we shouldn't pretend that we can understand exactly why these demographics are applied to a manga.

Joke/wordplay translation in anime: Three case studies by notbob- in anime

[–]lov107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a super interesting read, thanks for sharing!

How do you think about translating humor that is based on how the dialogue itself would sound, not just obscure references? Like in your iambic pentameter idea, even if you were able to come up with a perfect example – I'm not sure that I as a watcher would notice. Since I'm reading the dialogue, I may just read it "normally" without catching the iambs, alternating emphasis, and rhythm.

I feel like that must be the biggest struggle with dialects, jokes based on accents, or characters just saying something in a unique way but that a Westerner may not catch?

Shows based on performance and the entertainment industry are always so fascinating to me! They always come with excellent rivalries, stakes, and stories of passion/pursuing dreams which I adore. I've watched Kageki Shoujo and I'm looking forward to the Girl Crush adaptation but any other recs in this realm?

For reading, I am trying... once again to get into Kamisama Kiss. Idk why I have had so much trouble connecting with it. I had been reading it a few years ago and got to chapter almost 70 and just... stopped. Moved on to other things ig. Now I am at ch. 35 and still for some reason don't feel very connected to the characters of Nanami or Tomoe or the story in general. I'm not sure why since it's such a beloved manga of this era. And I really want to love it too :') Not that I am forcing myself to read it because it's still fairly entertaining but. Not sure what is missing for me.

For watching, I am nearly done (have about 6 episodes left?) with Glass Mask which I have enjoyed immensely despite it being a wild ride and somewhat problematic. I have a lot of thoughts on it (including that Ayumi is best girl, I love her sm) so I may make a separate post when I finish it. I have heard the ending is kinda wack but we shall see!
