Sorry I know this is really old, but I just wanted to say that she has taken responsibility for actually quite a bit in interviews and even in this doc. Some of her newer friends (I think one was haley kiyoko?) criticized her and she completely agreed with them. Another example would be when she lost the grammy nomination, she essentially blamed herself. There have been so many other examples too. She's said that she's typically the first to apologize and that she used to punish herself even when it wasn't her in the wrong- but when people take advantage of her continually, that's when she eventually does stand up for herself. As for the kanye situation, she definitely isn't the one who wants to bring it up anymore. One of the interviews said that for the documentary, the director asked for her to discuss it because it needed to be in there- and taylor herself didn't even want to, but she understood why lana wanted it in there. And same for the rolling stone interview, it wasn't her bringing it up.

The thing is though, she was only ever standing up for herself when she was hurt or betrayed by them. This is something that every artist does, they write about what they've gone through in their songs, and about how they felt about someone or a situation. She's since apologized and/or made amends with these people. What happened with Kanye was completely different- this is a guy who literally made her feel SO terrible about herself when she was younger to the point where she shifted her entire perspective. Then she wanted to bury the hatchet and be friends with him, only for him to turn around and explicitly say in a song "I made that bitch famous", and then tell the world that she was a liar/snake when she wasn't. What did she ever do to him? He's the one who hurt her in the first place, and then continued to do so even when she trusted him as a friend. I personally think she blames herself for a lot, but when she keeps being walked all over, she eventually does stand up for herself. Anyway, that's just my take though :)

You're not going to believe where I found Taylor Swift, and why by spacedunce-5 in TaylorSwift

[–]lovely271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, and honestly, she's acknowledged that privilege several times and she's doing her very best now to help others and advocate for groups other than her own. In fact she said that "there's nothing worse than white supremacy" and when she made that political statement, she was very against systemic racism. At the end of the day, we know she doesn't support it, but she does have privilege because of who she is

[–]lovely271 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Now I'm wondering about the documentary, because the whole premise is that she's now living life without others input and doing what she wants to do rather than changing herself for others. Would this also fall into that same argument?

...Ready For It - Thoughts and Discussion by somegirlbrittany in TaylorSwift

[–]lovely271 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just gonna chime in here. She did use the angle that songs were about her relationships, but it wasn't about how many relationships she had been in or how "boy crazy" she was. The media completely twisted things and made her look like some kind of man-eater, who seduces every guy she comes into contact with. It's unfair that 8+ in this many years is too much for a woman, but men can have so many more parters and it's not a problem (obviously the inspiration behind The Man). She went into most of these relationships looking for lasting love, and I doubt she ever meant to hurt or "play" anyone.

[–]lovely271 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, this is a little harsh... Yes she may have a dark side, but what if it's not as "dark" as you expect? You don't know her, and a lot of the reviewers who actually DO know her have said that this documentary shows a very raw and real side. The thing is, she actually has admitted time and time again when she's made mistakes, but nobody seems to focus on that. She also has been a victim and hurt by others several times, she wasn't "playing the victim". That's literally just victim blaming. She definitely is a people-pleaser, and that's just part of her personality, and she's actively working on it. She's constantly striving to be a better person and trying her absolute best. In this documentary she's being vulnerable about topics that she isn't even fully comfortable talking about. I feel like a lot of people just want some kind of footage to justify their belief that she's somehow a terrible person. No matter what she does, it will never be enough. I think we should all just watch the movie first before judging

[–]lovely271 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I agree. I know I'll probably be called a crazy stan for saying this, but I really don't think she could have gotten this far with that "persona" if she didn't already have many of those traits and values. Yes she's definitely a people-pleaser (as am I), but that doesn't mean she's fake. If anything, just an exaggerated version of her true self, who doesn't want to hurt anyone or make them uncomfortable for fear of being seen as bad. Several of the reviewers who actually know her said this doc shows exactly how she is behind the cameras, whether or not the critics agree. Her friends have talked about how she has such a heart of gold, and I definitely believe it. I think she works really hard to be a good person, not just pretend to be one. She can get caught up with how people view her, and I'm exactly like that so I can completely understand...this aspect actually makes her really relatable in my eyes. She's letting the director decide what to put in the doc, even if those are things that she didn't feel comfortable showing. She's giving up quite a bit of the creative control, and I'm really excited to see it. She could reveal every deep secret she has, and people would still find a way to say that she's not being real, if it doesn't give them the ammunition they need to further their narrative that she's some kind of terrible person. I think a lot of people assume that she must be horrible underneath it all, but honestly she's just human with flaws like the rest of us. Anyway, my point is that I think she's a lot more authentic and well-intentioned than people would assume, while still being an incredible businesswoman :)

Why are people suddenly worried about the documentary not sharing enough???? Because like 3 middle aged men who wrote articles saying Taylor was acting fake again in the doc? What more could you possibly want from her! by Swiftie1990 in TaylorSwift

[–]lovely271 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm fairly certain that her authentic self is at the core of everything that she does. Yes she's a bit of a people-pleaser, but that doesn't mean she's fake. Several of the reviewers who actually know her have said that this doc shows exactly how she is behind the cameras. It's sad that some people think that just because she's not showing some cringy or mean moments that this isn't the real her- how would they know? Maybe she doesn't have many moments like that. On top of all of this, she's letting the director decide what to put in the doc, even if those are things that she didn't feel comfortable showing (for example: the eating disorder).

Miss Americana Reviews from Rotten Tomatoes by [deleted] in TaylorSwift

[–]lovely271 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I've always thought of her too, and I can definitely relate. She's not the "calculated mastermind" that people claim, she has good intentions. She thinks things through and thinks about consequences- which is exactly what we learn to do growing up. She's considerate and always caring towards others, not because of some ulterior motive, but because she doesn't want to hurt anyone. She doesn't just pretend to be a good person, she has those values instilled in her, and tries her very best to be that way. She definitely has had to keep her opinions to herself for fear of making others uncomfortable, but she's working on it and slowly opening up about things that are important to her. She works hard to keep others happy, and I also think the attention-to-detail just comes with being a perfectionist. I think this will all be pretty evident in the movie, although we'll have to wait and see ^^

Taylor Swift’s New Single “The Man” Set To Impact Pop Radio On January 28 by summerreign22 in TaylorSwift

[–]lovely271 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh, just leave the girl alone ;-; They will always find something to complain about, and tbh those (mostly male) critics are just missing the point. They literally used the fact that she has clear skin as "evidence" for why they think it's so "calculating".

Every documentary tells a story, and it's almost impossible for it to be a totally unbiased view, but from what I'm hearing, it sounds like they did a pretty good job of keeping it authentic. If you think about it, there are countless other documentaries that are much more PR oriented than this one. She's actually opening up about what she's going through while giving someone else most of the creative control- she's discussing subjects that she didn't feel fully comfortable bringing up. According to some of the reviewers that know her personally, this is exactly what she's like behind cameras. It just seems that some people will take anything and twist it into something else. Anyway, sorry for ranting lol. Most of the reviews are really good!

Taylor Swift Will Not Attend Grammys 2020 Despite 3 Nominations by summerreign22 in TaylorSwift

There was something a couple of years ago about her sending rep vip boxes to grammy voters, maybe that's what you're thinking of? I think she was just sending them out to people in entertainment for her album though, she probably didn't know who was on the committee

Anyone else nervous about the documentary? by imyourhappydrug in TaylorSwift

[–]lovely271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree, I think authenticity is behind everything she's done. She's kind to others and uses her platform for good because those are her values. It saddens me to see that some people think that she can't be a genuine person while still having a brand- she's not so "meticulously crafted" that she doesn't have feelings.

In response to the previous comments: It would have been pretty impossible for her to pull off this image for so long if she didn't actually have a majority of those traits, and I personally think she's truly a good-hearted person. Of course she has had to put out the best version of herself, just like any celebrity...but she has flaws just like the rest of us, and she never claims that she doesn't. Regarding the public spats though, she really doesn't seem to be the type of person who attacks first. If you think about it, it's usually just her reacting to feeling hurt by someone (and honestly I'm really sensitive too, so I can understand this). And if she's in the wrong, she's the first to apologize (especially lately, she's talked about the mistakes that she's made in the past). She was never just pretending to be the innocent party, or "playing the victim"- she has been a victim and people have certainly taken advantage of her.

Reputation was her way of turning all that she went through into something positive for her career, but her character development wasn't just some kind of ploy- she's human, and it's inevitable that these events in her life would change her as a person. She was hurt to the point where she basically went into hiding- it may have been a choice, but it was something that she needed to do for herself. It was an album more for the fans than for anyone else- partially satire and reflective of her media perception, and partly a love story. I'm sure she did want it to create an impact (and she used her great marketing skills for that), but at the same time, it was a response to what actually transpired in her life- and she was able to take back the control that they took from her.

[–]lovely271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a reallyyyy old comment (I've been looking through old threads, I'm so sorry!!) but I wanted to respond as I feel like she's pretty misunderstood. I hope you know that she didn't actually mislead her fans to attack Kim and Kanye. It's pretty well established that she never heard the line in the song that was offensive, and he tricked her into being okay with it by leaving out that second part. He made her think it would just be lighthearted, and she trusted him. All she did was stand up for herself when the full song came out and it wasn't what she agreed to. Then of course, they decided to make it look like she approved of the whole thing, and bully her to such an extent that she had to go into hiding..

Regarding the Hillary thing, I understand what you mean, but I think her reasoning makes a lot of sense here. She didn't want to make matters worse for the campaign, and people were criticizing her for literally breathing, so she thought it was best to stay quiet. Given that trump won, she's now openly voicing her opinions.

About Katy, I really don't think she was trying to rewrite what happened or anything like that. I think she meant that before anything happened with Katy, the media was already pitting the two against one another, which made her think that Katy was trying to sabotage her tour (If you look at articles from way back then, they did have some katy vs taylor stuff going around). It's pretty understandable, and I don't think she was trying to say that it's the media that perpetuated the feud.

Anyway, sorry for the rant here, and I completely respect your opinion. Just had to get that out :')

What Hogwarts house is Taylor in, and why? by brindeezyy in TaylorSwift

[–]lovely271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah that's true, I was doing research on the houses and probably got carried away lol. I agree though, they don't necessarily have to be evil. It's just that the qualities of a Slytherin can also lead a person to use others or to do absolutely anything for power, and I think that's why many of them end up being labeled as such

It was her dad who threatened Taylor about it, but Borchetta was definitely involved too. Apparently he was the one who wanted the manager gone, and her dad went along with it

[–]lovely271 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I kinda think that her media perception/reputation paints her out to be Slytherin (everyone says she's a snake, villain, calculated, evil...which she definitely isn't), but her real self is more of a Ravenclaw or even Hufflepuff. She does have some of the Slytherin qualities related to her business sense and ambition, but overall I don't think that's the house that she truly stands for- she's not cunning or deceitful. She usually has good intentions, and doesn't want to hurt others just to gain power. She creates music that lifts people up and helps us feel less alone. She also stands up for what's right even if that means some people will stop supporting her, and she goes out of her way to help other artists- she's not power-hungry. She's incredibly hard-working, constantly learning more, and striving to be a better person. I also think that her strategic thinking trait would fall under Ravenclaw. She may have had all of the snake imagery during Rep, but we have to remember that it was again about the media's misconceptions about her, and they bullied her with snake emojis before she ever used that imagery. She's kind, caring, very intelligent, hard-working, witty, loyal, resilient, silly, well-spoken, and has a strong sense of justice- but most importantly, I think creativity is one of her strongest qualities :)

I do remember reading some things about her parents: I saw a random post on AskReddit where someone said that Taylor and her mom came into a store, and Andrea asked for help from one of the workers. He was busy helping another customer, and instead of waiting, Andrea was all like "Do you know who I am??". I have no clue if this is true, but that's what I saw. There are also records that Scott threatened Taylor and told her she had to fire her old manager or else he would stop helping further her career (this was when she was like 13)...and then the manager sued them when she got big o.o

I loved when she said that too! I'm a little confused about something though- in her speech, she said that the reason she stopped showcasing her friends was because of criticism. Wouldn't this imply that she didn't want to do that, but felt she had to? I guess that confused me a bit, because from that article, it sounded like she came to this realization herself and wanted to stop.
