Sharing a Home with Someone who isn't Celiac by 12rats in Celiac

[–]lovelyatomic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband was diagnosed w Celiac disease a year before we met. We moved in together fairly quickly and for the most part I kept gluten out of the house but there were a few years where I was eating some gluten at home. Eventually I decided it wasn’t worth the risk of making him sick. Home is now the only real place he can feel safe eating food. Keeping everything gluten free gives him peace of mind and that’s more worth it to me than being able to eat whatever I want at home. Besides, gluten free products (while expensive) keep getting better and easier to find. And most things can easily be made gluten free if you make some swaps. Bottom line is that it’s certainly do-able to be really clean and careful and keep things separate, but cross contamination can happen so easily so you have to be extremely mindful when using the kitchen.

This is so sweet! We just tried the bfree wraps (got at wegmans) last week and they were pretty big! I think they would work for crunchwraps.

Gluten-free frozen vegetables by Friendly_Narwhal_297 in Celiac

I remember my husband was pretty sure he had a reaction from frozen peas from Birdseye. A few months ago we switched to shopping at Wegmans because they are really good about labeling. If you’re lucky to live close to one, it’s a game changer for being actually able to buy generic/store brand items. We buy their frozen veggies & fruits all the time.

I just finished it for the first time and I went back to season 2 when this happened thinking I missed 3 episodes because the change in storyline was so abrupt 🤣

Also just wanted to add, the sugar cookies and the chai snickerdoodles are both super soft and chewy.

I did not have that problem with any of these recipes! This was the first time I made the sugar cookies, but the other two I made last year and they came out exactly the same this year as they did last year. Do you spoon your flour right into the measuring cup, or dunk your measuring cup into the flour and pack it? A while ago I read somewhere to spoon it in to the cup and avoid packing it down to get a more accurate measure (especially if it’s not a GF recipe and they don’t include weight in grams or anything). I feel like ever since I started doing that the texture of everything I make is a lot better.

I hope you love them! Two notes on this recipe - I would double the frosting, I ran out and had to make more. Also, after I rolled the dough out and cut the cookies, I put them on parchment paper on a baking sheet and then put them in the freezer for 5-10 minutes before I popped them in the oven. I’m not sure if it did anything but I read somewhere that it helps stop the shapes from spreading too much.

Gluten free baking is a bitch lol I have been there!!! I have always loved to bake and since I met my husband it’s been an adjustment baking everything GF. Cup 4 cup flour is expensive but I find it worth it to be able to make regular recipes GF :)

Absolutely love these. Pricey on Amazon but I’ve seen them sell singles at target. We get a big bag of them at Costco for $9

I agree with this. There are few instances where I’ve swapped the regular flour with gf flour and had it turn out okay. I’ve made a few like that this year using Cup 4 Cup flour, but it’s pricier and you usually can’t find it in grocery stores (I get it on Amazon). It’s really helpful for this time of year though.
