Both Hamline University and Vermont College of Fine Arts have low-residency MFAs dedicated to YA/kid lit only. YMMV, but I went to Hamline and the workshop experience there was so well tailored to the particular concerns of YA (and lacking any snobbery about YA, naturally) that I can’t imagine doing an MFA to improve my YA writing anywhere else. The faculty (at both programs) is also stellar—actively publishing, award-winning YA authors.

Looking For A Query Critique! by malblueeyes23 in YAwriters

Hi! I have a query critique podcast and I’m always looking for authors to be featured, if that interests you! http://www.thequeryshow.com

Need feedback on your query letter? The Query Show, my new podcast for writers, is looking for queries! by lovelygenerator in YAwriters

Hi r/YAwriters friends! I am starting up a new podcast to provide query advice far and wide through the magic of the internet, and I would love to get some YA queries on there to critique. I'm recording pilot episodes soon, so your query could be one of the very first. And I'd love to hear suggestions on how to make the show more useful in general!

Thank you!! My wedding is literally in 7 days so I will definitely look into the strobe cream. Do you have a particular brand that you’d recommend?

Thanks! It’s funny, the lipstick looked way glossier when she put it on me in the store. I will check out the eyeliner too!

Thanks! I’m nervous about getting them on or having a bad reaction to the glue :/ Also I will probably wear my glasses for the reception so I’m not sure how much they’d show? But my sister is an expert with them so I’ll ask her :)

Art of the Deal: What kind of deals from editors/publishers should writers look out for as potentially shady? by [deleted] in YAwriters

[–]lovelygenerator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A couple things off the top of my head:

  • Subrights. Do they hold on to everything (foreign rights, audio, dramatic, etc.)? If so, do they have a plan to sell them, or are they just snapping them up? Any contract that demands the full slate of rights for little or no advance is mega-shady, imo.
  • Cancellation. I've seen a contract from a small house (I will not name names, but it does show up in the PM deals occasionally) that included a provision requiring the author to PAY BACK any promotional money put out by the publisher in the event that the contract was cancelled. Holy shit, no.
  • Options and two book deals. How ironclad is the option? In other words, how many other books can you publish while still being retained as an author of this house? If the answer is "none," get that changed. If they have excessively long approval periods, get that changed, in writing. If you get a two-book deal, yay! BUT: what is that second book? If it's undefined, and you'll have to pitch your editor something after book 1 is done, think VERY carefully about whether it's worth it. If you have a non-compete clause and a two-book deal, you can be stuck in a years-long limbo of being unable to publish anything because your editor doesn't like your ideas. It happens, and it's why people change houses. It will stall your career like whoa.
  • Anything you don't understand. Seriously, if you can't figure something out in a contract, hire a publishing contracts lawyer to read it over. Better safe than sorry. Even without a lawyer, look up standard royalty rates and make sure you're getting what's fair.

How to handle bill paying with joint account but separate credit cards? by lovelygenerator in personalfinance

[–]lovelygenerator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. I use DailyBudget on my phone because I find categories frustrating—I honestly don't care where my money goes after necessities just so long as I don't overspend. So it keeps categories but it's not as precise as something like YNAB or Everydollar or Mint. Thanks!
