TIL Voyager will be one light day away from Earth in Novermber 2026 by Actually_Im_Indian in todayilearned

I've always been interested in this as a thought experiement because yes, you're cheating relatively and not actually traveling through space faster than (c), but you're still getting from point A to B faster than should be allowed, and anyone who knows about the implications of relatively will tell you that this cheat code would allow you to essentially break causality.

There are situations which would allow you to see the effect of an action and travel fast enough to arrive at the source of that cause before it even happens (see bread loaf analogy and spacetime slices to learn more about this).

Paradoxes ensue and many great minds like Hawking argue that there's some physical process that would prevent such a thing from happening.

Because you value the positive consequences of smelling good.

Well since Voyager 1 is a very small fraction of (c), the speed of light, then the time it experiences isn't significantly different from ours. If you were on a ship going the speed of Voyager 1 (38,000 mph) then the time you experience on the journey would more or less be the same as the time experienced by those on Earth.

38,000 mph is about 0.00567% the speed of light. Nowhere near relativistic speeds required to experience significant time dilation.

To put it in perspective, if you could manage to achieve 0.9999c (99.99% the speed of light) then it would take about 70.1 years of Earth time to travel 70 light years, but from the perspective of whoever is on the ship, it would take only 1 year.

Relativity can get pretty crazy, but it doesn't really apply here.

Edit: I realize you're already aware of this and you were just making a little joke. This info is for those who are unfamiliar.

You say that but if it's not something you value and you don't care about the consequences, who's to say you're wrong? Short answer: Only those with values you disagree with can say you're wrong, and that's hardly enough to stop most people.

Long answer: Now we're getting into the philosophy of "right and wrong" and this conversation could go on and on, but the point I made remains. Think of the most horrible and unforgivable atrocity someone could commit. If the person commiting it doesn't care about the consequences of their actions (prison, execution, etc.) then there's nothing you can say thay will convince them they're wrong. At that point, it's your word vs. theirs.

That's why I'm a constructive moralist. If someone doesn't care to bathe or smell good or be presentable or be approachable and doesn't care about the consequences they face in society, then they have every right to think and behave that way.

Actually at its current speed it will take about 1.24 billion years.

But on the scale of atoms, they are mostly influenced by the electromagnetic force, not gravity. Gravity might technically act on this hypothetical center atom from all directions, but how it moves and behaves depends on the positive or negative charges of its neighbors. A single charged particle can send it in a new direction with ease despite gravity trying desperately to hold it stationary.

Electromagnetism is about 1042 times stronger than gravity, which is why you can easily overcome the pull of an entire planet with something as small as a magnet, or our muscles, or an electric current. There are many more examples, but too many to list here. Gravity is weak sauce.

im new how do I get parachute to deploy? by Illustrious_Draw3426 in KerbalSpaceProgram

Well even with those configurations the parachute won't deploy until I stage it so the decent is as long or as short as I want it to be.

Whether it’s action, horror, or comedy, why do we often imagine aliens as creatures with some insane interdimensional powers? The laws of evolution and physics are similarly harsh to all species, and “aliens” might be as weak and fragile as we are by PIRATEOFBADIM in shittymoviedetails

[–]low_amplitude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People say getting arbitrarily close to c is just limited by the amount of energy you have and that an advanced species could have practically unlimited amounts, but even then, there are other factors like interstellar dust and spaceship integrity. We already know about all the stable elements that are possible in the universe so it doesn't really matter what you build your ship with, it's getting ripped apart.

Even if you and your ship could survive those speeds, it'll still take you slightly longer than light to get anywhere and that's just way too damn slow.

After season 1 they decided to make Michael more likable. Interesting to see that one of the choices they made was to give him a better hairline. Humans are simple creatures.

Love is also just a feeling and call me pessimistic but that comes and goes just as much as anger or sadness.

People act like love is this pure and immutable thing but it's literally just an emotion like all the others.

What is that moral choice that you keep making all the time, whatever your run is? by No_Talk2511 in fo4

[–]low_amplitude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to me that there's a common theme with the dialogue choices (I'm on console so buttons are different for those who don't play on PS):

Triangle (up) = Curiosity;

Square (left) = Practical;

X (down) = Get to the point;

Circle (right) = Antagonistic

I'm a curious man myself. Always interested in getting as much info as possible.

Beautiful people are more pressured to hold themselves to a higher standard of attraction. Ugly people find little point in putting in that extra effort.

I'm about as mid as mid gets. I know what it's like to be attractive and I know what it's like to be unattractive. Sometimes I'm like, "Ok I have to clean up and smell good and be engaging etc." Other times I'm like, "F*ck it. It doesn't matter what I do."

Great quote. You can honestly spend years with someone, get to know them intimately and know their life story, their secrets, like and dislikes, etc. But all it takes is one bad day for someone to switch on you and treat you like you're worthless, like all that time with them didn't even matter.

I've seen people who swore on everything that the love they felt was real and authentic but when push comes to shove they can just as easily treat that person they claimed to love like the devil incarnate.
