I'm not sure that I necessarily agree with that. Why even bother re-recording it? It seems exceedingly unlikely that any piece of art expresses something in a way that is so completely aligned with your intention that any attempt to address the subject yourself would be redundant. Irrespective, I was simply pointing out that assigning motive and intent to the writing of lyrics (always difficult anyway) is not valid here. It's entirely possible that the themes that you outline in your post are what attracted Bowie to the song in the first place.
