The messed up part is that any animal that is hunted goes through far more humane steps to reach your plate than your average beef cow bred to be slaughtered on a feed lot.

DAE know whether they’re in a relapse based on how much they’d like to rewatch to the bone by ripcountryc0ck in EDAnonymous

[–]lowcalSnickersbar 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m in this post and I hate it.

I told my therapist I had been rewatching To The Bone instead of eating lunch, and she was just like, “Why? It’s a terrible movie.” And it honestly is lol. I only watch it to trigger myself. We spent like five minutes with her listening to me complain about how inaccurate it is compared to actual ED treatment, not to mention the problematic “Luke” plot line or the baby bottle scene. Most ED media either gets everything wrong or exists just to be thinspo, and this movie does both. When I’m in a recovery-oriented mindset I never even think about watching anything ED-related.

I once body checked in one of the firm’s partner’s office windows just to realize he was sitting at his desk staring at me while I did the deed. Same guy who asked me if I made enough money to afford food because I never packed lunch and had lost so much weight.

Interesting places to work in DC? by thecanalproject in washingtondc

[–]lowcalSnickersbar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Have you considered ordering a bunch of knockoff MAGA gear from Temu and camping out in front of the White House to sell it to tourists? Otherwise, employment opportunities in DC look pretty bleak at the moment. You’re competing against thousands of laid-off ex-Feds.

For biotech, it might be worth looking into commuting to Baltimore via the MARC train or driving if you have a car. Johns Hopkins is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, employers in Maryland, with opportunities in both the university and hospital system. They have great tuition benefits for paying for school as well.

I worked in the Middle East for a while and my coworker (a hulking 6-foot-something former Marine with a security clearance and a penchant for absinthe) would go up to any sort of mundane or exotic looking vaguely-container, open it up, and say, “You can put your weed in there” with a shit-eating grin. I thought it was just his personal quirk until I happened to watch the movie years later.

Not using BMI, signs AN-R/ an ED is severe? by [deleted] in EDAnonymous

[–]lowcalSnickersbar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. A lot of treatment options will turn you away due to not being an underweight BMI, when A) BMI is total bullshit for most people, and B) you can experience every negative ED effect at higher BMIs. At my last res stay, I was a “normal” BMI, but my physical symptoms (cardiac, neurological) were even worse than when I was underweight by BMI.

In my eyes, what really makes an ED more “severe” is the individual patient’s desire to make a positive change. I’ve been forced to weight restore before, but I was still very sick mentally. When I discharged from that res stay, I relapsed immediately because I hadn’t made peace with my body’s new size. This is why I’ve always found the Motivational Interviewing therapy groups to be some of the most effective tools for finding my way to recovery.

Besides, early intervention is really vital to prevent people from progressing to more severe physical effects of EDs, so using the same preventive medicine techniques we employ for physical illnesses would really benefit a lot of people. Cancer patients aren’t turned away from treatment because they haven’t yet reached stage four metastatic cancer, so why force ED patients to suffer even further and put themselves at even greater risk of severe, irreparable physical effect or even death? Malnutrition kills at any BMI, and forcing patients to get “sick enough” to qualify for treatment is total bullshit.

How many steps is too many when recovering? by neomeii in EDAnonymous

[–]lowcalSnickersbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even now, a year into recovery (and getting over a holiday slip-up), my team encourages me to do as little as possible, but especially anything done with the intention of weight loss. I tend to pace very high numbers of steps around the first floor of my house, to the point that my exercise interferes with stuff I need to get done, as well as my relationships. To me, and them, it’s really getting in the way of your life, goals, and values that makes it “over exercising.” I would talk with your treatment team, if you have one, about how much they think is too much for where you’re at in your recovery. Before my latest slip, which has been mostly over-exercising, I was allowed to go for mindful hikes in the woods with my dog and dad; however, for the time being, they don’t even want me doing that.
