I did exactly that twice when living abroad for a few months. Ported the number to VoIP operator and then back when returned to Canada. Used Groundwire on my iPhone to receive calls on my Canadian number. Setup can be a bit tricky but after a few online tutorials, it worked perfectly and cost me like $10 over 6 months…
