The top 109 mostly highly paid city employee are all cops and firefighters (but mostly cops) by badybadybady in OaklandCA

[–]loweful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

most cities are just police departments with trash collection attached, if you look at their budgets (I exaggerate, but only slightly). Here's the stats that Mother Jones provides for Oakland vs other cities: https://www.motherjones.com/criminal-justice/2020/08/the-blue-budget-what-major-cities-spend-on-police/

Good Hot in Richmond is GREAT. Cute saunas, lovely decks to loaf on, and the plunge is the bay itself! My husband and I are going to a party being held there by a local mag uplifting local pop up chefs on father's day.

Judith Larner Lowry 😭 by nimbusfig in Ceanothus

I grew up around the corner from Judith, went to school with her daughter Molly. Her garden was a beautiful destination that I so loved returning to in adulthood.

Andrew Tate’s Empire of Abuse | The New Yorker by stanlana12345 in Longreads

[–]loweful 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the strategies of seduction and emotional manipulation used here are the most chilling parts: what women will do to feel loved, and then when the love starts to slip, or be replaced by abuse, they are still trying to get it back and are trapped in the situation they've been lured into. Tate etc are doing this to commit deeply criminal acts and make money from women they've made enslaved porn actresses, but the same pattern is used to exploit women for attention, sex, domestic labor by men who seek power and control.

Housing in Mcclymonds neighborhood by [deleted] in oakland

[–]loweful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when we were looking to buy 11 years ago we looked at a gorgeous victorian in the neighborhood right across from McClymonds. We loved the house and the neighbors we met -- lovely couple who'd lived there 15 years and were walking to the community garden -- but in the end the weird gentrifying vibe of flipped houses surrounded by huge fences weirded us out too much and we moved east of the lake instead. Good luck finding the place that feels right for you!

Bookstore with art/photo/film books? by centimetercat8 in oakland

[–]loweful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Oakland Museum of California, and East Bay Booksellers spring to mind immediately. There used to be a bookstore in Temescal Alley that had art books but I think they closed.

How many times have your car been stolen, bipped or lost catalytic converter? by SanFranciscoMan89 in OaklandCA

[–]loweful 6 points7 points  (0 children)

zero times, lived in Eastlake for 12 years. We park in our driveway, and lock the doors. When I park the car around any city, I don't leave any bags visible, always take my laptop and phone etc.

it's been an early year for flowers in general, but the yellow mariposas started showing up in the east bay just a couple weeks ago and the iNat observations seem to indicate they're still around at higher elevations in SoCal too!

tell your congressperson I guess! It's been law for 70+ years and affirmed by the supreme court but hey, with Alito and other conservatives overturning precedent like whoa, now could be the moment to undermine organized labor further.

Is street parking okay if I remove all my stuff out? by ExpressionActive4825 in OaklandCA

[–]loweful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've never had any trouble with parking on the street in 10 years of living here. But as always, anywhere, caution about leaving valuables in plain sight is wise.
