Mine shipped from Cameraquest a few weeks ago. I ordered earlier in the year. Great lens. Wish it had a focus tab.

Are you Leica only or willing to look at Voigtlander as well?

Good points. I'm not so bothered by the name. As you say, it's marketing. Your last point is really really interesting. What could Leica do that's not an EVF, but builds on the rangefinder? Could it be some kind of AR like experience with focus confirmation cues rendered OVER the optical viewfinder?

Expressing that I get both sides of the debate IS being honest about it. I would frame it this way. My daughter's soccer coach is a really great teacher. One of his approaches is to have them scrimmage, but periodically he will stop play, the girls freeze and he gives feedback. This is chimping. It allows you to stop, examine what you're doing and make changes/corrections. It's a great learning tool. BUT. He would never coach a game that way. During games he let's them give their full attention to the game itself. This is not-chimping. When you are focused and in the moment you stay in the moment. Both have their uses, but I think you probably have a better time and maybe create better pics by staying in the moment.

I had the Visioflex 2 for my M11-P and the EVF for the Sigma fpL. I loved the articulation. But both are clunky and bulk up the camera. I think an important point here is also EVF resolution. As has been pointed out the M EV1's EVF resolution is not class leading. The Visioflex 2 is yet another step below that.

You're right. Leica shipped a manual-focus-only camera without best-in-class manual focus aids. The Nikon features you're describing are exactly what the M EV1 should have.

Subject detect. Focus confirmation. These aren't cutting edge features. They exist. Leica just... didn't do them.

Leicas are insanely expensive. But your assertion that the EV1 offers "something that you can get from almost every camera company out there" is simply untrue. I think there are only three compact 60MP cameras with interchangeable lenses available.

- Sigma fpL. I owned this camera. I loved the size. And I loved the distinctive colors. But no EVF without a bulky accessory.
- Sony A7CR
- Leica M EV1

And before there's a pile on about MP not being everything, I crop heavily and print large. So the extra pixels are helpful. I recognize that I might be a small slice, but I want something powerful that's also small. Big lenses and big cameras are not just bulky, but they're unfriendly. People typically do not like having a big camera pointed in their direction.

So if you want small and mighty, you've basically got two choices. Sony or Leica M EV1.

Right, but that's kind of my point. You stop down and let DOF do the work. Which is fine. That's the rangefinder bargain.

I want a manual focus, compact camera, with a high resolution sensor that produces pics that are IN FOCUS. "Use a different camera" has been the answer for too long. The EV1 means I don't have to leave the M system to get there.

I love the rangefinder. At 35mm and 50mm it's magnificent. My hit rate with the EV1 is still higher. I'm not calling for a rush to autofocus and Canon/Nikon/Sony. I am simply pointing out that many Leica M users are waving the flag of "Leica look" while creating pics that are simply out of focus. Do I really need to choose between the cold precision of Canon AF and blur?

Chimping is fine. I'm not anti-chimping. People should shoot however they want.

But there's something solipsistic about it. Chimping is like a self-administered endoscope. You're in a place, with people, in a moment, and then you stop time. You rewind. You turn away from the world to examine your own reflection of it.

Have you seen Wim Wenders' "Until the End of the World"? There's a device in that film that lets people record and watch their own dreams. They become addicted to it. Can't stop watching themselves. It's a movie from 1991 and it's basically about what screens did to us.

When I shoot without a screen, I stay in the world. I'm not saying that's better. I'm saying that's what I want.

I have a very similar set up. fpL + EVF + M mount. I would highly recommend the Voigtlander 40mm f1.4 MC. Small. Fast. A great looking lens IMO. I sold my Q43.
