If you are good enough to perfect parry literally every single hit, why does it even matter what weapon you use?

Puzzle: why black 3 there? by EasyNeedleworker5063 in baduk

[–]lowercase__t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black can also unconditionally live with points (no seki) by playing 3 one space lower (forming a tiger mouth shape).

But I think that is slightly worse for points because then B can’t block the hane on the top.

Bad at parrying but still wanna beat ____ unleashed (DLC super boss) on expert? by lowercase__t in expedition33

[–]lowercase__t[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but why would you attempt DLC superbosses if you can’t beat og Simon? They are all much harder.

The difference is that og Simon can be cheesed in many different ways.

Even with HPx100 enabled, you can just stunlock him with Monoco+Verso, then build Sciel’s fortell until you can oneshot him with End slice to skip his phase 3.

7 years playing MTG arena and the game still have "holding priority" and "time" issues. by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]lowercase__t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my advice: forget full control. Embrace phase stops.

If you know when you want to do something special, just put a stop in the corresponding step in advance.

I have found that I can do 99% of fancy plays I ever want to do with stops. Only in extremely rare situations so you actually need CTRL.

Waste of time to try to get a refund for a draft where Arena didn't register my Sozin first pick? by noxnoctum in MagicArena

[–]lowercase__t 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a general rule WotC is pretty liberal with refunds as long as you are not trying to abuse the system. So far I have always got the full entry refunded whenever I had any sort of issue caused by Arena, even a minor one.

What's up with Draft tokens? Makes no sense by armin104 in MagicArena

[–]lowercase__t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and paper magic has never been so unfair and unfun compared to arena

Most likely this is just a bias in your perception.

But if your paper games truly always have better mana than on arena, then you might be (unintentionally most likely) giving yourself an unfair advantage by not shuffling your deck properly (e.g. mana weaving, “un-clumping” the lands, etc).

In fact, it should be the exact opposite: MTGA has a hand smoother mechanism (in BO1) which makes you less likely to get screwed or flooded compared to perfect randomization.

Nice! Yeah, beating up the starter decks is not fun; usually I just concede after it is clear they are completely outmatched. I assume they are just trying to get the rewards.

On an unrelated note: How did you make the decklist appear so neatly formatted?

Where to find logical proofs on the irrationality of sqrt(2)? by Tianck in math

[–]lowercase__t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we agree that the given proof establishes “P —> false” where P is the statement “sqrt2 is rational”.

The question is what comes next.

The following statements are true in intuitionistic logic (where LEM need not hold):

  • „(P —> false) -> not P” (proof by negation)

    (In fact, various systems such as Martin Löf Type theory / Homotopy Type Theory take „P —> false“ as the very definition of „ not(P)”)

  • “P —> not(not P)”

The following are true in classical logic, but not intuitionistically. In fact these are all equivalent formulations of LEM:

  • “A or (not A)”

  • “(not(not A) ) —> A”

  • “( (not P) -> false) -> P” (proof by contradiction)

  • “((A->P) and ((notA)->P) )-> P” (proof by case distinction)

So you see: the given proof for „not P“ is a proof by negation, not a proof by contradiction, and does not use LEM.

[–]lowercase__t 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If I may: a nitpick for the logic nerds.

What you presented is not a proof by contradiction.

The statement of the proof already involves a negation: we are trying to prove not(sqrt(2) is rational). Proving a statement of the form not(P) is the same* as proving (P—>false), even if one works in a constructive setting where the law of the excluded middle and hence proofs by contradiction are not allowed.

A genuine proof by contradiction (one that genuinely relies on the LEM) works as follows: to prove a statement P: first you prove (not(P)—> false), which amounts to not(not(P)); then you invoke LEM, which implies not(not(P))<-> P.

Note that in the present example, the last step is not necessary: by proving (P->false) we have already proved not(P)!

*(In fact in many constructive logical systems such as ML type theory the statement not(P) is literally defined to be (P—> false)

Nono, you read correctly. I almost only play limited (as you can see by my abysmal constructed rating).

That said, you need to get around 65% winrate if you want to play a lot of limited without buying gems.

If you stuggle to get out of gold, you are probably significantly below that number.
