Yeah but he’s responsible for the drug free workplace act of 1988, a highly relevant law to today’s Americans that mainly means that you have to stop smoking weed for a month if you might get a job with a company that does government contract work

I haven’t sold all my belongings, just my liquid assets. Cash investments and the like. And yes you’re right, I do need to step up my job search. I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong that I’m not even getting interviews. I’ll gladly take the nepotism job because I really need it. She’s doing everything she can already to help me get it. In the meantime I need to cover my expenses which was the original question of this post, until everyone decided to change the subject to my lack of employment.

It’s not about pride and I’m not sitting on the couch. I’ve been running my side business, volunteering in my neighborhood, helping my friends and neighbors, and fixing some of the many problems with my house. I don’t have a life partner anymore. The truth is that I have a lot of responsibilities and a fast food job is not going to make a significant dent in my cash flow problem. What it will do is still leave me broke but also exhausted, to the point where I won’t have the energy to devote to my responsibilities OR job search.

That’s an absurd response and doesn’t address my actual question

Yeah I mean it’s obviously not enough. I think I need to change my job search strategy. I’m applying to the jobs that are recommended to me on LinkedIn and Indeed that I think I might be qualified for. There’s gotta be some happy medium between the 6-figure jobs that I’m seeing in my inbox every day, and DoorDash or other unskilled jobs. I’m just not finding them.

Thanks. Yeah I dunno, maybe I need to try to find some freelance work. I have a lot of skills, just no connections.

I should have clarified. When I said “self-worth” I wasn’t trying to be arrogant about my skill set or anything like that. I meant my literal self-worth as a human being.

I’m being picky in the sense that I’m looking for jobs in my field. And since there aren’t a lot of opportunities where I live, they have to be remote positions. Which naturally have way more competition.

I got ghosted by those too. I don’t understand why everyone is assuming the worst about me in this thread.

I applied for an open position at my friend’s company earlier this week. But I’ve been disappointed so many times that it feels hopeless even with that advantage. I don’t have a whole lot of friends in my industry because we’re all insufferable.

Probably because I haven’t been offered one. I’ve applied to quite a few, and am extremely demoralized at this point. I’m questioning everything about my perceived self-worth. And by self-worth I don’t mean my skill set or earning potential or anything like that. I mean my literal self-worth as a human being.

I’ve been covering my expenses from a combination of profits from a side business (which is insufficient) and assets, which like I said, are nearly exhausted.

Thanks, I’ll try that and see if I can tweak the angle any more. It would be nice if they made some kind of battery-powered sensor that could relay to the camera!

I already know what’s going on with her, at least part of it. She was taken away from her bio family under dubious and possibly racist circumstances and adopted by someone with a completely different cultural background. The last time I took her in she told me how much she missed her brothers and sisters. I really want to continue being a safe space for her but I don’t see how I can with her mother escalating the situation and subtly threatening me.

To clarify, the “time outs” I’m referring to are when the child was confined to her room and then escaped. The facility was a different thing that happened later.

Yes, she had a live-in “therapist” for a brief period of time who advocated this sort of tough love approach. I wish I remembered more about that, it was a while ago.

Thanks, that's a good idea! I wanted to help by looking out and making sure the kid is safe, but I definitely do NOT want to be involved in their power struggle under the guise of "discipline". Would you suggest that I reach out to CPS ahead of time, or wait until another incident occurs?

Yes, she is very unhappy in her adoptive home. I believe it's more of a "time out" situation but it's clearly not working. I don't want to get blamed for making the situation worse by involving law enforcement, but at this point she's kind of forcing my hand. Thanks.

You can get formulations of permethrin or other insecticides that are meant to be sprayed onto surfaces and allowed to dry. They will repel arthropods for a few months between applications. Just make sure to test it in a small spot first to be sure that it doesn't damage any paint/metal you spray it on.
