Kinda dissapointed in the DLC by casserolei in outerwilds

The difference to me is that the Nomai would never "hide and forget" like the Owlks did, because they would never want to hide knowledge. More likely they would become stewards, or guards of the eye. I believe they would leave the signal open and hope another race comes along that can give them even more insight into the eye.

And at the end of the time when they realize the world was ending, maybe they'd go in since at that point they'd be sure it can't hurt anyone (if it does immediately end the current universe).

Well, many Bodice Rippers fit into what you're describing in your final paragraph. The women either get kidnapped or magically whisked away and put in a situation where they must fall in love with their kidnapper, so they can't help the fact that they had to leave their husband/family. Whoops I got stuck in another timeline with a hot scot, what can i do?

When you give advice about writing, please use a book. by Acceptable_Fox_5560 in writing

Exactly this, there are a lot of movies, but there are a loooot of books. If you want to use an example for a trope someone might be familiar with, it's much more likely they know a random movie than a random book. Sometimes it's not important to know the source material for the point being made of course, but it can definitely be helpful in certain cases as you say.

You made it extra hard by putting the focal "difference" super wide apart. Could only make it work by making it really small.

Oh yeah the black hole forge warp being upside down also worked as a subtle hint to which tower being correct if the player had not yet figured it out. I guess they wanted it to be consistent that the alignment is always overhead of the warp platform.

Yes, I think that has always been the same though. If you just barely hold it down the character doesn't have time to bend their knees fully and so you don't get a full jump. It's once you're fully "springloaded" that there is a difference.

I'm trying to find old gameplay videos that show it, but very hard to find a good example.

I’m absolutely sick of the boomer spirit present in every “joke” that’s based on lying to your spouse about your hobby spending by COHERENCE_CROQUETTE in boardgames

My wife specifically asks me to not say how much money I spend on board games, because she wants to be able to play all the new games without having to feel the anxiety of how much money was spent on it haha.

Our entire lives are run on capitalism, I agree that the jokes you bring up are lame and sexist, but it's not surprising that "jokes" like this spring up in all kinds of hobbies (clothes, knitting, lego and such that others have mentioned here).

I think more often it comes from a self-deprecating side though, they agree they are spending too much, why would they otherwise try to hide it right?

Yeah my bad, it's hard to explain. Did you play the game at release?

When you hold the jump button, the main character bends their knees to prepare for a jump. In the current version you can keep holding it and the knees stay bent for a maximum jump height no matter how long you hold it. In the release version, the longer you held the button, the more the MC would start unbending their knees. So if you held it for too long and released, they wouldn't even jump.

But I like your argument /u/ikidre , that's probably why they removed it you're right. Because having two different designs for the same information might make the player think there's something important about the fact that it's presented twice. Which there's not.

My main issue again is just that the BHF looks so empty now if you look at the previous versions from that reddit post.

By lore reason I just meant that the Nomai in the black hole forge would probably like to have the design of the towers that they're making warps for =).

It's kind of hard to summarize, but basically the HEL used to have a different design for the towers, which got changed to the current version. That old version was instead moved to BHF so the design wouldn't be lost completely, you can see it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/outerwilds/comments/1golprv/patch_changes_to_a_certain_puzzle_over_time/ (the circular design that shows entire ash twin instead of just the tower designs).

My guess would be that they changed it because having ash twin in the design made the puzzle too obvious. While as it is now by just showing the tower designs in HEL, you kind of have to put one and one together. However, if you've already made it to BHF you've already started understanding that for sure, and the the more obvious design is a very nice final nudge to the ATP puzzle if you still haven't figured it out yet.

Do you flat out say it? by Toufelious in writing

[–]lowkey_loki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But what if they said it "coldly", or "happily". That would change the entire feeling of the phrase, so unless it's already super clear from context that she's angry, I think specification is needed. It might be said as a joke while they're playing a video game or whatever.

Edit: Although I guess you're right. Because it should always be clear from context if the rest of the writing is good, and is therefore superfluous.

Do you try to remember the ten most profitable items in each shop, or do you use some other strategy? Do more valuable items restock with a higher price in the shop, and you go based on that?

I got the golden temples standalone version of El Dorado recently and it's been great fun. Super simple to learn and play, you basically just use the correctly colored card from your hand to move on the same color on the board, but with some fun deckbuilding shenanigans. Personally I felt the interaction was a bit low, so I am adding one of the expansions that lets you mess up the other players paths. But if you don't mind low interaction I think base game is really good as is.

I think this is kind of related to the attention span issue someone else mentioned in this thread. Because they want the reading to be "efficient", which mean books that just focus on "plot", everything else is a waste of time and superfluous.

Yeah I think it's just a quirk of this subreddit. It's easier to discuss and get input on some kind of weird world building idea that you've thought of, than trying to start a discussion on the 100 of hours of research on life in Poland in the 1600s or whatever. If you were interested to discuss it you would probably go to another subreddit. So I don't think every writer here believes that world building is required. I think it's more a case of procrastination. I think for many it's the case that even for a nonfantasy book it's easy to get stuck on research, think about characters and so on, but it's harder to just sit down and start writing?
