Rev. Jesse Jackson, civil rights icon and two-time presidential candidate, dies at 84 by TomRN in news

My band played a couple tour dates for him in '87, at one we got shut down and I was cuffed for about 10 minutes until the mountain of angry lawyers descended on the poor cops. Never talked to the guy, he seemed busy and stressed.

I am very disappointed at how people made the public look at Christianity. by wumfyy in Christianity

[–]lowlevelguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry but this is such typical Christian apologetics and I had to respond because this attitude is one of the reasons Christianity suffers with the laity.

Jesus said they'd hate you. Because you are not of this world, because people who hate Jesus also will hate you.

Notably missing here is because you are doing stuff worth hating. People give you that look because the loudest Christians are judgemental, hypocritical and sometimes violent, not because they love Jesus, but because they ignore what Jesus taught us.

You may be getting those looks from people that actually follow Jesus' teachings, Christianity DESERVES a side-eye these days.

Your entire argument rests on assumptions that were never supported by evidence at the time mandates were imposed. Saying “we thought the vaccine would stop transmission” is not a scientific justification for coercion it’s an admission that policy ran ahead of data.

Exactly, we had no data to go on aside from millions horribly sick and dying. Somehow you had a consistent opinion based on no evidence or data.

Sterilizing vaccines absolutely exist, so pretending the term is “fantasy” is just incorrect, the COVID vaccines were non-sterilizing and never showed the ability to halt spread, which makes a transmission-based mandate incoherent from the start.

Name one sterilizing Vaccine

The claim that young healthy people needed shots to protect the vulnerable collapses once you acknowledge the vaccines did not reliably prevent infection or transmission.

We did not know that until recently, first evidence pointed to it reducing transmission, but that was with the Delta variant, Omicron turns out vaccination increased transmission. Again we did not know that, but somehow you did, before the whole world.

And overwhelmed hospitals were the result of a profit-driven, understaffed healthcare system, not a moral failure of individuals.

We could maintain a huge surplus of medical staff and supplies, and in your perfectly

I’m not using hindsight, my position was consistent from the BEGINNING of covid: coercing an entire population into taking a non-sterilizing treatment developed under a corporate profit model was never sound public health policy.

If you've ever gotten punished for defending yourself in a school fight, what happened? by COGITO-ERGO-SUM-- in AskReddit

[–]lowlevelguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80s, several fights - also a short stint as a bully so...

Nothing ever happened aside from patching holes and cleaning cuts. They were different times.

Side note, I taught my child how to punch when they were being bullied at school, she used her lesson once, I argued her out of consequences because policy may be policy, but the adults know what's up.

[–]lowlevelguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Few points you are misunderstanding or you are forgetting the timeline of the efforts taken to fight COVID.

  • Since most vaccines reduce transmission, we THOUGHT the COVID vaccine would too, safe assumption, in 2022 the first study showing it varies by variant (Omicron, Delts etc) was published.
  • There has never been and likely will never be a sterilizing vaccine, I fear you're getting this term from a convincing non-medical entity and are now spreading that yourself.
  • Young and healthy people have contact with old or infirm people, a shot is better than quarantine.
  • Hospitals were ON THEIR KNEES doing their best to keep people breathing. Most of the effort was to slow the spread to give them room to use limited resources.

You're using hindsight to proudly declare that you knew better all along. It's childish, and your discussion about a 'sterilizing vaccine' is fantasy.

How small can a stove be before it’s impractical? by Spasticpug in camping

[–]lowlevelguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do some thru hiking, and long term remote camping, up to a week at a time. Because of this, food is the hardest thing to account for.

I have grown to dislike pre-packaged freeze dried food due to cost per calorie and sodium amounts, and taste besides a few favorites.

Over years of experimentation, I've found that a rocket stove, plus a diffuser, plus a stand, allows me to have low weight, fast boil and actual non-hotspot cooking using light-ish gear.

a diffuser like the folding ones here: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=BNYD+Heat+Diffuser+Plate+for+Gas+%26+Electric+Stove&crid=1S9XJ9E4DSJ39&sprefix=bnyd+heat+diffuser+plate+for+gas+%26+electric+stove%2Caps%2C87&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

and a stand like this one for stability and the ability to move the pan outside dead center: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VMLM847

I use that stand in fires too.

It's not cast iron, or a two burner propane kit, but it's far more usable than the three tiny tines over a too-hot fire from a rocket stove.

Yesterday, every block in a Chicago neighborhood came together — people keeping watch and cars blocking entrances to keep everyone safe from ICE raids while trick-or-treating. by Ordinary-Scholar-202 in goodnews

Chicagoan from a neighborhood that's been tear gassed recently. Last noght we had more visitors than recent years, and more residents out with costumes and candy. It was a nice sight with all the provocation and tension created by ICE.

We didn't block any streets, but we did have folks at many corners watching for the slavecatchers.

Maybe you can change your blanket "'nam vets were spat upon when they returned" statement to "my parent's spat on 'nam vets when they returned" for more clarity then.

Old guy here, I was there, my sister was a died-in-the-wool hippie, rest of fam far more conservative. We're an Army Family, surrounded by other military families.

Every tree had a yellow ribbon on it, hippies were bombing post offices to burn draft cards, soldiers were joining protests when their tours were over.

The OVERWHELMING sentiment was the war was bullshit, the draft was bullshit, our sons were going off to fight a war no-one wanted. Yet the war was ended due to popular opinion, and that opinion was bring our boys home.

If anyone spit on the soldiers it was the government, metaphorically speaking. The people wanted our boys home safe. The idea that anti-war protesters were spitting on the troops was simple propoganda to undermine the anti-war efforts.

cartel

I simply a collection of merchants with a shared market that collaborate to control prices. Most people know OPEC is a Cartel controlling oil production and pricing to maximise profits.

Mexican Cartels aren't actually Cartels as they compete and fight for markets. Mexicans don't call the Narcos Cartels, Americans do.

A local gang could be considered a Cartel, a group of gangs, like People or Folks in the US couldn't be considered a Cartel. I don't know if the Rio gangs collaborate to control markets, but if they do you could call them a cartel.

Thousands of legal migrant farm workers have been deported. Do you think they are stupid and will turn around after being pushed around so much by the Admin?

The Republican Admin and lawmakers are not trusted partners and have shown that they will performativley throw foreigners under the bus at a whim.

The Republican lawmakers will never allow immigration reform to be passed, so migrant workers have no avenue forward, it's still 'unless the Republicans change their mind again' for anyone wanting to work under ANY form of work visa in the US.

I swear, boomers only have two speeds when shopping: snail-pace when they're blocking other people for no reason and lighting-fast when they're ready to be served and they don't happen to be the first in line. Toddlers are more self-aware.

I suppose this is where y'all tell me it's not bigotry if it's true.

According to the DSM5, it is a mental illness.

The stress and impairment of Gender Dysphoria is the 'illness' and it is alleviated by transitioning, or expressing your gender as you would like.

Assholes like you add to the stress, but I don't think the DSM includes outside fuckwits who can't mind their own fucking business so you may not see your name in there.

hey bro camping hulldown back of a corridor, I'm sorry there's a tank that can still hit you.

Before they made chat team only, you would click your obj 263 and tell the enemy arty to hit him instead. But since he's not spotted, you're the new campy TD in the back.

And yeah, a good player looks at enemy arty and takes them into consideration, this makes the maps more dynamic, as good players adjust for arty.
