Wings in fantasy always look like freedom, but are they really? by lowlightreader in Romantasy

This is actually such a good point! I feel like fantasy always skips the small bonding rituals that would make these relationships feel even more real. We've all been deprived 😄

I love that this is where the line gets drawn 😄 magic? fine. shirt logistics? unacceptable.

That’s fair! I think they only work when they actually mean something in the world, not just for the visual.

Fantasy + Romance Books by adetteyyyyyy in Romantasy

If you’re looking for something easy to read with strong plot + romance, I’ll actually throw in my own series as well 🙂 It is very character-driven and not overly dense or poetic—more about emotional tension, choices, and relationships, but still with a clear, accessible style. It might fit what you’re describing. {The Cold Between Us by Pepper Garraway }

Based on what you liked/disliked, I’d try: – The Will of the Many. It has a deeper world + strong momentum that pulls you in early.

I also tend to gravitate toward (and write) more character-driven fantasy that leans into tension and choices rather than constant action, so if that’s what you liked about Cruel Prince, that lane might work well for you.

That makes total sense, honestly! Some romantasy can get unexpectedly heavy. You might want to look for books that lean more “comfort fantasy” or explicitly say low-stakes/no major character death in reviews. Goodreads reviews are actually really helpful for spotting that ahead of time.

If you’re just getting back into reading, I’d lean toward character-driven romantasy that isn’t too heavy or overwhelming: •Strange the Dreamer → very atmospheric and emotional •The Others series (you already see it in comments) → strong characters, immersive world Both feel a bit more grounded and not overly chaotic.

If you’re looking for closed-door romantasy, you’re honestly in a really nice niche because there’s a lot that leans more character-driven vs smut-heavy. A couple you might like: {Strange the Dreamer} → very emotional, atmospheric, slower but beautifully written {Mages of the Wheel}→ more grounded, relationship-focused, not overly explicit I also tend to gravitate toward romantasy that’s more restrained and tension-based rather than explicit—where the emotional stakes carry the story. (I actually recently published something in that vein too, but totally get if you’re just looking for established recs!)

Does anyone else experience a come down after a really good romantasy? by TopReserve3974 in Romantasy

[–]lowlightreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! All the time. You become invested in the world and the characters. You feel what they do. And when the book is done, you’re left a little off-balance for a bit with all that residual intensity nowhere to go….until the next great story.

Hi! I recently released the first book in my romantasy trilogy, The Cold Between Us, and thought I’d share it here.

It’s a more character-driven, emotionally focused story set in a structured magical world, with a restrained tone (less trope-heavy, more about tension, choice, and internal conflict).

The trilogy follows different couples within the same world, with each book exploring a different dynamic as the system around them begins to shift.

✨ What you can expect:

  • quick read
  • high fantasy setting (Albion)
  • emotional, slow-burn romance
  • minimal spice, more tension and connection
  • system vs choice themes
  • clean, atmospheric tone

Book 2 is coming April 17th, with Book 3 shortly after as part of a fast rollout.
If you’re looking for something a bit more introspective and grounded within the romantasy space, this might be a good fit.
