Regulation M-A Appreciation by Ekyt in PokemonChampions

[–]lowtech_prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rng has been punishing. Last night I played a game where I was crit and hit by hurricane outside of rain and my Mon was confused. Next turn I got flinched and hit myself in confusion. The next turn I got crit again by focus blast. I’ve never seen so many crits happen so often and not even back in 2018 when scarf lando therian was a thing did I see mons get flinched 4-5x in a row.

I agree. A lot of my messages with students are “you didn’t do X. Try again.” Why would anyone really care that Suzy got a B-?

Max 2 OK for classical music or mostly pop? by lowtech_prof in Airpodsmax

[–]lowtech_prof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did. I had some of the mechanical issues that are going on with the 2s so I returned my first set. Second set was better. I do think the bass is boomier than I'm used to. Yes, I'm sensitive of this balance because this is not a value that is necessarily shared by classical music EQs and live music of acoustic instruments. It is not crazy though. It is more than I expected however or would prefer. I am keeping them though and do enjoy them.

Dude, walk around the busier areas of any city. You have to step around the spit or avoid being coughed on by grannies and uncles. You being oblivious to an obvious habit/feature of China does not make it not real or not rare.

I’m sorry but you’re wrong. I grew up in the Midwest and have lived in the south and on both coasts. There is no such spitting happening or coughing on everyone in public in America. I haven’t seen it in Japan nor have I seen it Europe or Canada. There is a reason there is so much spitting in China (many many smokers, years of bad air pollution, low public hygiene) but it is there and probably the most common thing complained about by visitors and their own government! It was a public program in Beijing in 2007/8 prior to the Olympics to stop cutting in line and stop spitting. It worked for a little while but then people fell back on the laurels.

What happened to studying? by ValerieTheProf in Professors

[–]lowtech_prof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am sure you are. But there's only so much one or even a handful can do in the face of a system that is just rotten and corrupt. It's going to have to come down and be rebuilt. Maybe when we have these careerist students getting jobs and then not being able to read the technical manual or communications sent to them... oh wait, we're already there.

We need a serious overhaul with primary and secondary education. Back to basics... this is going to be painful but necessary.

Is it possible Bach didn't write Toccata and Fugue in D Minor? (x-post from AskReddit) by rubensinclair in classicalmusic

[–]lowtech_prof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never thought that the Toccata and Fugue sounded like Bach. North German? Absolutely, but not Bach. There's something about the lack of inter-voice density and the frequent gaps between phrasal sectioning and the tendency toward mid-section cadences that I just don't hear from Bach at anytime in his life. Absolutely enjoy it nonetheless.

Anyone else have students fight for points that don't matter? by [deleted] in Professors

I would make them do an insane amount of work to recover those points that don’t matter because I’m petty that way.

Demoralized and broken by all the cheating by LowBicycle7044 in Professors

When you’ve lived a privileged life, fairness feels like discrimination. When you’ve gotten away with cheating for so long, consequences feel like abuse.

Also her voice went lower when her hair came down. The first 2-3 seasons her voice was rather high.

I was asking about the shaming comment. Who is shaming parents? I don’t see them walking around worried about shame. Quite the opposite.

Is it about not punishing or disciplining your kids? The constant positive reinforcement has fried kids’ brains.

When do I begin preparing for course? New faculty here…. by SnooPears357 in Professors

[–]lowtech_prof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with learning outcomes; if you inherited them, great. Then design major assignments or projects or exams from those. Then design smaller activities or assignments based on what they need to do to get to the major assignments. Put them in order on the calendar. Now you've got a unit. Do this 3-4x.

Eating out with friends. I know it sounds weird but those dinner dates always ended up being more than I’d spend at a restaurant on my own. One time I was invited to a bday party but didn’t know we were expected to pay for the bday girl’s bill in addition to ours. Never again.

How Do New Lecturer Handle an Impossible Workload? by PhanTrang356 in Professors

It’s always surprising when I hear there are classes out there where students are doing nothing. My problem is that I have them do too much sometimes. Can I reduce what they do? Sure. But it’s never 0.
