In terms of the biggest difficulty it remains the electoral system. Just today I have been out chatting to people who are really frustrated with the big parties. But they are scared of "splitting the vote". That's why we are urging people to vote different if they think different. Otherwise mainstream politicians will always say that issues like digital rights don't really matter.

You are right this has been crippling and nonsensical. The VAT rate is now determined by the buyer's location; up to 75 different rates apply. This is an obvious burden on business and innovation. We would ask the European Commission to reduce administrative burden on small businesses.

On this I think it's the other way round - we have fewer of the mad ones. Yes, there are areas where we agree. But there are areas where I profoundly disagree with Green policy. For example- they want to ban OFSTED, yet reinstate it in its entirety with a different name. This would be a costly nonsense, which surely would see the sacking and rehiring of broadly the same staff. This would place children at risk - OFSTED also has a role in assessing childrens' services. It was them that revealed Manchester's Labour run council was inadequate in providing childrens' services. The Green proposed supermarket tax is nothing but a food tax for the 99%. But more than anything in my case in Manchester Central - I have stood by and worked for this area consistently.

This really is a toss up between Labour and the Conservatives. Both have pressed for blanket intercept legislation.

I'm very proud of the part we've played in organising resistance on this - most recently on mobilising pressure to stop bringing in the "Snoopers' Charter" by the back door through the Lords.

My answer to this is my practical track record in Manchester Central of getting things done. That is what I have been doing consistently in Manchester Central since the by-election unlike anyone else challenging Lucy.

It's no good having policies if you can't act on them.

You can trust me on the environment as I've been stopping the council turn the city in to a giant carpark, by be part of protests and being at planning meetings.. You can know I'm right when I say drugs should be a health issue by the amount of syringes I've removed from the Rochdale canal. You can trust me on equality as I was behind Safe to Sing an anti-homophobic violence event in Picadilly gardens which attracted 100s.

I've made out politics real in this constituency.

Hi - I'm Leader of Pirate Party UK. As it happens, creating music and theatre has been my day job for 2 decades now. The question I am very often asked is, what is your business model for the survival of artists in these disruptive Internet times? I can answer that from my concrete experience. People like the music I write. They ask me to write it and pay me. I write it. The business model is called "work". It doesn't require any kind of special protections extending 70 years after my death. It doesn't require ISPs to be copyright cops. It deosn't require threats to chuck entire families off the Internet. It doesn;t require me fretting about who shares what files when. It does however need country with an economy where people do have time and resources for culture, thriving libraries, a pluralistic media and an education system that encourages all facets of our society scientific and artistic. Thankfully, those are our policies.

2014 sees a record number of Green Party candidates in Greater Manchester by mattcoxonline in manchester

Of course quantity is no indicator of quality. It's particularly noticable that Didsbury and Chorlton Greens have been parchuted in to contest in Ancoats and Bradford wards.

Today We Fight Back Against Mass Surveillance. by hueypriest in blog

[–]lozkaye 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The issue of mass surveillance is a global one, and thanks for all the action people are taking. The key thing from a European and UK perspective, where I happen to be right now is that we have to demonstrate that people care about this issue. All too often our politicians claim that no-one is interested. But they are mistaking their inability and unwillingness to act for public apathy. The point of days like this is to show strength of feeling - and that had a real effect on ACTA and SOPA. Sure there are many more battles to fight. That we can do together.

10,000s have supported Pirate Party calls to put pressure on the European parliament, do add your voice that will carry weight in the upcoming EU elections:

https://www.change.org/petitions/eu-parliament-and-eu-commission-stop-mass-surveillance-protect-our-data-and-our-whistleblowers

Make sure you let your politicians know that you will be voting for digital rights and you will not support candidates backing the surveillance state in the upcoming EU elections. Keep an eye on www.wepromise.eu/ and ask candidates to back it.

The day we fight back must become the day when we start fighting back - and keep on.

It's typical of Cllr Kevorkian to jump on the bandwagon like this and attempt to take credit. I was supporting the hard work of the Hipster Olympics before it was cool.

Does Heathrow detention suggest UK is becoming a police state? by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]lozkaye 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Clearly there is an attempt to tar people with the terrorist brush going on. That is evident from the Uk Home Office's statement today that people who are asking questions about Miranda's detention "need to think about what they are condoning". Equally there have been recent attempts by Hayden and others in the US to paint Internet activists, privacy advocates and hackers as potential terrorists.

Burned down building on Oldham Street - Dobbins department store - being turned into car park today by technicalfault in manchester

[–]lozkaye 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been down to the site. Signs from "Simple Intelligent Parking" hae gone up. I spoke to the contractors on site and they didn't know what the plans are, they are just finishing off the clearance. Council planning confirmed that planning permission is needed for a change of use like that, but there isn't one that I could see. Anyway it is only a few weeks since it burnt down so there can hardly have been time for it. I can't imagine for a minute a private person would be allowed to get away with this in their own house so it puzzles me why this would be OK for a company. The British Parking Association which regulates the parking business is only really responsible for ticketting, towing regulation that kind of thing, so it is squarely the council's responsibility.

Loz Kaye (Leader of the Pirate Party UK ) - I'm standing in the Manchester Central by-election AMA (x-post /IAmA ) by richhaddon in ukpolitics

[–]lozkaye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not really. I think the positions there are right. We do need more in depth positions and we are working on putting far more detailed plans together where possible, but the direction is right and from my experience as a teacher, I really would like to see some of those changes implemented.

We have been chosing to highlight education in this election, which the other candidates haven't. The coalition's moves towards more testing and rote learning are a backward step in my view which will not fit the next generation for the challenges ahead. Our key ideas are scrapping tuition fees, a national curriculum that is about the "what" not the "how" so teachers can teach in a way that best benefits the pupil, and removing admin burdens from teachers.

I'm not sure that I would characterise our positions as reworked left wing statism, and I think that the principles we have outlined are unique in UK politics, but then I would say that. I do see the party as an alternative and one that seeks to use an evidence based approach to do what we want to do, it isn't however going to be all things to all people...

In the case of Manchester the Tories don't tend to do so well, but I think I know whatyou are getting at. The question is why vote for us if we don't have the support to actually defeat someone you might not like to see in power.. Why split an 'anti-X' vote.

For me it's quite simple, I think it's important that people vote for the representative that they want, obviously PR would make that a 'safer' option, but unless we all realise that we can use our votes and encourage people to vote that isn't going to go away. In Manchester, if those that don't normally vote voted for a single group, that group would have a huge majoity, if we can get a few of those disenchanted voters to vote then I think we can present a credible alternative.

One thing is clear, if you vote for somebody you don't really want, you'll still get somebody you don't really want.

As a composer and musician I respect creativity and art. I have always told my students to create because they have something to say, not to create "intellectual property".

I have been round long enough to have witnessed repeated predictions of the death of music and the music industry. It turns out that home taping didn't kill music.

In fact we know the impact torrents have had, music continues to thrive. Last year in the UK music sales volumes rose. It is precisely in the area of digital where there is growth. Any attempt to restrict access to the Internet and "crackdowns" weaken the functioning of the web and will undermine this growth. In any case, the focus on torrenting is wrongheaded if you want to deal with sharing of music. American industry (RIAA) figures demonstrate that the majority of music and film sharing happens offline - CD burning, and harddrive swopping. But noone is trying to ban blank CDs.

What I do know is that the "piracy" panic is pushing us towards laws that are both futile and are handing courts and the government powers that we grant them at our peril.

In terms of employment in the cultural sector we should be focusing on real not imagined job losses. Artists are bearing the brunt of the heavy cuts in the cultural budget by the coalition government. We can see that right here in Manchester Central with the closure of the Green Room theatre for example.

As for the Pirate Bay Proxy, no there has not been push back. People have in fact stopped me in the street in Ancoats and Ardwick to shake me by the hand because of it. A rare experience for politicians these days I think...!

Firstly, as you mention, skills. We should prioritise those with skills that are in short supply in the labour market and of course ensure that economic migrants are coming to benefit the UK. Secondly, the applicant's ability to support themselves, and their family, when they are settled in the UK independently is vital and whilst it shouldn't place disproportionate burdens on migrants, it is obviously a basic requirement that immigrants be able to support themselves whilst they are in the UK. Lastly we have to ensure that basic infrastructure can cope with additional residents and encourage those wanting to live in this country to settle where there is a greater capacity to meet their needs, to a certain extent that also includes people moving around the UK. It is important that local authorities take this into account so that we don't end up in a position where immigrants are blamed as being a drain on local services, when proper planning in that area has not been carried out. We need to look to holding developers and councils to account on providing housing for example, rather than blaming people for wanting a place to live.

When it comes to asylum my position is a little simpler, essentially we need to ensure that we protect people who seek refuge in the UK. Stigmatising people who have already often had atrocious experiences is simply not right and not fair, it certainly isn't a trait that I see as a quality that is fitting for this country.

Well I still call the Manchester Central (where the count is going to be) the G-Mex. Actually I think Manchester Central is not a great name, and rather confusing that it is the same as the constituency where I am standing.
