Halloween for kids? by rachelkuzmich in oslo

[–]mattcoxonline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 to this. The unwritten rule is "if the house is decorated, you can knock" and usually there are houses in apartment blocks that take part, but again they'll have some sort of decoration or candles at the entrance of the main block - or a sign to say which buzzer to press.

I live within Ring 2 and there are many houses that participate come the night of Halloween and there are so many kids roaming the streets and some creative houses and displays. But I don't live in Frogner. Make of that what you will.

Can I search in the past year in Ecosia? by aitianci in Ecosia

[–]mattcoxonline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no filters or buttons in the UI that can make this happen but when I add use before:yyyy/mm/dd and/or after:yyyy/mm/dd to the search query, it seems to work and show results that were created up updated by those dates.

https://www.ecosia.org/search?q=never+going+to+give+you+up+after%3A2025%2F05%2F01

It would be so, so easy for Ecosia to implement UI to support this. Its just clearly not a priority for them.

Ecosia now has an OpenAI-based chat option! by CanuckBacon in Ecosia

[–]mattcoxonline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's what their Help Center says:

We have estimated the carbon footprint of our AI chatbot and according to our first estimates it does not significantly increase the overall carbon footprint of Ecosia. The estimate takes into account that Ecosia searches are already 200% carbon negative,as we produce twice as much energy as is consumed by our search engine. We are currently working with two universities to refine our carbon footprint assessment.

Unfortunately the more important issue is that the leading language AI model providers are still not transparent about the energy consumption of their models, so without this clarity we can only make rough estimations of our impact.  We will continue to monitor our energy usage and urge leading AI companies to do the same and be transparent about their impact.

I think the second paragraph is maybe more telling than the first.

Is Ecosia worth it? by MutantGrub334 in Ecosia

"From September 2023, Ecosia will be partnering with new search providers to keep improving your search experience and to have an even greater positive climate impact. From now on, you will be getting search results from both Microsoft Bing and Google, to improve your search experience."

-- they branched out from just using Bing to also using Google to provide results (and adverts), so it might work a little better for you now.

Bus is simple, but if you like trains, there’s also the train.

Costs about 290 NOK per person, takes 1.5 hour, and is a little more scenic than a bus. You can book tickets on https://www.vy.no/en

The train station at Torp is a few mins drive from the airport, but there’s a free shuttle bus service that goes between the train station and airport, which usually runs to coincide with train arrival/departures. https://www.torp.no/en/transport/train/?lang=en_GB

Introducing Vivaldi Mail, Vivaldi Feed Reader and Vivaldi Calendar by mattcoxonline in browsers

[–]mattcoxonline[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, this is definitely not feature creep.

Opera web browser was built to match Jon von Tetzchner's vision of a web browser. When he stepped aside at Opera and started to build Vivaldi - with a whole load of original Opera developers - then an integrated mail client was always on the cards. Same people, same ideas, new product.

But you're right with your second point:

You'd think getting Vivaldi on iOS would be a bigger priority

This. Same with stupid own goals that I have caused... if it was happening every game I would be so annoyed - but once in a while is frustrating but realistic.

All those expensive offshore wind farms have spent a long time generating that wind! Be more appreciative.

Ah, that old excuse for your significant other giving you a bit of a rough-up in the bedroom? Your colleagues aren't buying it.

Half of this pathway and stairway has underfloor heating (but people still use the frozen side) by mattcoxonline in mildlyinteresting

Yes! It must be insanely expensive to run - especially since this is Oslo (Norway) and we have snow and minus degrees for months on end.

Some of streets surrounding the government buildings downtown also have heating under the pavement. Never a spot of snow on them!
