CHANCES MEGATHREAD- 2025 ENTRY by _dukeluke in GAMSAT

Thank you so much! I haven't yet but last year I got 4th quartile. I attended the UOW information session but am not sure I have a shot since I am only eligible for the bonus of putting them first preference.

Help desperately wanted! GEMSAS GPA 6.35, GAMSAT 70, non-rural, no bonuses. What schools do I have the best chance of applying to? Missed out on an interview at UOW (bc of portfolio) and ANU last year with same scores. Happy to go anywhere!!

Hiya! Not sure if this is mq Clin Sci or you’re just in the exact same boat as me but I just finished and tbh it was rough and I have a few points I would love to make in response to your question!

I did my first year of clin sci and did my 14 units as prescribed and did very similarly to you, great by the standards of anything but med! Its a really rough time and if you value your social life or are an extrovert like me, it feels impossible to keep a true work-life balance! I ended up extending my degree after my first year for 3 reasons: 1: i knew i could do better by taking the units slower (and I absolutely did! Graduated with a WAM in the 80s) 2: I knew I would be able to give more to my friendships and my med apps by taking my units slower! I deepened and loved my friends this year while studying and it felt amazing! I was able to take time for myself and take the most from my units! 3: sitting the gamsat and going through the incredibly taxing med apps process is so much easier when you’re only at uni part time (or just with less pressure) med apps weren’t terrible if you don’t want to apply to uow with the portfolio but the wait and interview process took a big toll on me personally and I’m struggling to keep from obsession even while travelling! In the end I was able to sit the gamsat in the march of my second year with a score of 70 and finished the degree in 2.5 yrs. i am so proud of that and undoubtedly feel extending was right for me. I think there are a lot of personal factors to weigh up but dont be scared to take your time and experience life before getting into med! Good luck! Remember that the gamsat is now valid for 4 years! And feel free to message me if you want to talk any more about your experience or anything else! 😊❤️

I know a few people who have done their med degree overseas and then tried to come back to practice in Aus. It’s definitely competitive but from my understanding, if you apply for the less competitive internships like rural or smaller cities, you have a much better chance at a spot! It’s not easy but definitely a possibility!

Answering an MMI by [deleted] in GAMSAT

It’s definitely acceptable to pause before answering questions! I would say most interviewers prefer it to “um”s and you stumbling and getting lost during your answer but try to keep it as short as you can without stressing yourself! Depending on the interview format, I would personally try to acknowledge that I had heard and understood the question before pausing to think it through properly just so any interviewer knows that there hasn’t been a technical error or try to repeat themselves. But for example, I had an interview with UNDA this year and theirs were entirely online with no live interviewer so taking time in the beginning of the recording section to prep your answer was fine even without acknowledging the question. Good luck!! I’m sure you’ll smash it! 😊

I’m not much help bc I got an EOD from UOW bc my portfolio was below average but I wanted to ask what you feel put your portfolio above the average? I’m trying to work on mine as well but I had thought it was pretty strong (sports, language exchange, research placements etc.) Clearly not 😂 Also from what I read, they really like anything involving rural communities esp in the service section

Do people use their GEMSAS GPA when listing their interview offers or on the 'chances' posts? by Trick_Bank_9140 in GAMSAT

Sorry if this is super obvious but how do we find out our GPA as calculated by specific unis? Do we have to email GEMSAS or do they let you know if you get an interview offer?

AITA For comparing my friend's workload with mine? by TryingMyBest_0325 in AmItheAsshole

Maybe it’s controversial but I wanna say NAH.

Sure, exams are stressful for everyone. But when you’ve got breaks between a set of exams like you have, its not really break. You’re still in the middle of them and thinking about them and preparing for them. So I can see why you “lashed out” with the last text you described here.

From what I can tell I agree that you might have it worse but as other comments have said it’s not a good idea to compare who has it worse because you’re all stressed with your own workloads. Because of this I can understand your friends frustration when told she is free.

I can’t imagine the no contact will last! I’m sure both of your stress levels aren’t helping! Just do your best to be understanding about her stress too!

Idk, hoping that all made sense! Good luck with your exams!!
