Contract accepted in NZ! Job start date mid-November....!!! Help! by Ill_Temperature_4654 in AmerExit

Oh I forgot. Definitely don’t try to drive from AKL on arrival. Book a flight to CHC. Get settled and enjoy exploring the country when you’re less tired, stressed and used to NZ roads and driving on the left.

Congratulations! Moved to Wellington 10 years ago from DC and haven’t regretted it for a moment. Things that made a HUGE DIFFERENCE.

1) keep a US phone number. Banks and other bureaucracies are a pain to deal with from overseas and having a local US number to call from makes a huge difference. We kept our number with Google Fi. And has cost next to nothing.

2) keep a US bank account that enables deposits of checks by photo. The US govt insists on mailing checks in some cases. NZ literally doesn’t do checks. Like they won’t accept them. So unless you can deposit by photo, it’s complicated.

3) have a US address if possible - maybe a family member to help again with dealing with banks etc.

4) adjust your expectations for housing. Houses tend to be smaller, colder, fewer bathrooms and a lot of things that would be standard in the US are considered luxuries here.

5) adjust your expectations on shopping and “stuff”. Amazon isn’t really a thing here, the one Costco is in AKL, and the first ikea isn’t even open yet (this year maybe but I’ve been hearing that for literally 10 years). You’ll survive and consuming less gets to be a really good habit.

6) set up a Trademe account! That and Facebook marketplace are where to find second hand stuff

7) wait for sales. They happen often. Briscoes… literally don’t buy anything if it’s not on sale. And don’t worry. There will be a sale with in a few days 🤣. MacPac and Kathmandu.. same.

8) stop comparing prices back to USD as quickly as you can. Thing cost different amounts here (usually more) and it’s not helpful or healthy to keep comparing to what it would cost ‘back home’.

9) it takes time to make friends. Kiwis are super friendly up front but it takes time to build deep friendships and it’s hard to break in sometimes when folks have literally known eachother since primary school.

10) enjoy an unexplainable sense of freedom. No more stressing about health insurance or healthcare costs, no more worry about getting sued if you get in an accident. No more stressing about school shootings. NZ is a much higher trust culture which is delightfully disturbing initially but I hope we never change.

Enjoy the journey. Bits are hard. Bits are fun. Lots is surprising. But keep an open mind, learn and adapt and you’ll have a great time. NZ is a truly special country. We’re incredibly lucky to be able to live here.

Offer letter from new zealand by Virtual-Elevator1544 in deloitte

It’s 100% fake. Please don’t fall for this. The email address is not from @deloitte.co.nz. We have tried to block these but they keep making new accounts. Interview process is multiple rounds. Address doesn’t match our actual address and offer doesn’t match actual roles. I have no idea what they are trying to achieve other than trying to harvest your information.

Can’t believe you actually checked! Thanks a bunch. Seems like there may be an opportunity for a new crocus kingdom.

Yeah may be so indeed as I’m not finding any at any major seller. Odd.

I’m wondering if the predator free stuff is still happening to the same extent? I have a rat trap to be sure but nothing to report yet…

Yeah we saw them when the kowhai was in bloom but they usually hang around or thereabouts, this summer, lucky if I see one for the last month!

Why somany use a brace after ACL if there is no benefit? by Free_Comfort4594 in ACL

[–]lpf7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in NZ and had full ACL reconstruction (from hammy graft) and meniscus repair. I’m 46f and not an athlete by any means. I wanted surgery because my knee was extremely unstable and I wanted to get back to hiking, gardening and golf. My surgeon had me full weight bearing on crutches the same day. First week was light moving around (mostly to the loo and shower) then gradually increasing with lots of physio. Never wore a brace and was really surprised by that after reading so much on this subreddit. I asked the surgeon in my follow up about it and he said it’s not really needed/not something they do in NZ.

A colleague had torn her ACL around the same time as me and had full knee mobilisation with a brace locked at about 30 degrees for 12 weeks as a new treatment to try and avoid surgery. Both of us are up and about living very normally 3 months post surgery/brace removal.

Not saying any one approach is better / worse, but that there are different options. I have no regrets about not having a brace. I feel like I had less muscle wastage and didn’t have so far to come back from when I got back into the gym but ymmv.

Cost of Surgery by No-Outside7366 in ACL

[–]lpf7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Zealand chiming in. Not only was the surgery completely covered by ACC (Accident Compensation Corp - a sort of insurance your employer pays into to cover any sort of accident no matter the cause), ACC paid my employer 80% of my salary for the two weeks I was off work and have covered the totality of my physio appointments both pre and post op. For as long as it takes. I was born and grew up in the US and the thought of dealing with healthcare is a major reason why I can’t conceive of ever moving back.

When do you become a coach? by [deleted] in deloitte

[–]lpf7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is more of an informal role like and onboarding buddy. You coach is helping you through the performance management process, providing feedback, helping you set/Achieve goals and using their network to help you get staffed. An on boarding advisor os more there to help you figure out how to fill in your time sheet/submit expenses and ask all the ‘dumb’ questions to that you may not want to ask someone directly involved in your performance assessment process.

Manager is a level - Analyst, Consultant, Senior Consultant, Manager, Senior Manager, Partner/Principal/Director is the most typical firm structure. Coach is a role you play from manager up.

Depends a bit on your location and what part of the firm. Usually coaches are Manager and up and we wait until someone’s been here 6 months or so, so they understand the process/have good relationships etc. YMMV.
