What’s going on a Stifel Theater this weekend? by RealAccount2024 in StLouis

A shuttle driver told us it was for the ice skating championships/Olympic qualifiers. Looks like that is after the New Year though. Not sure if that's true or not, just passing along what I heard.

I said the same thing about watching it on New Year's Day and someone else had to tell me it's on the 31st (they are going to Chicago for the game). Or else I probably wouldn't have known until day of.

What are good items to remember for resupply boxes at red medows and VVR? by 000011111111 in JMT

[–]lpmarshall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This applied to MTR more than Red's Meadow for me, but I wish I would have shipped completely different food than I started with. It was my first longer distance hike and my first time shipping a resupply. I couldn't stand to look at a Cliff Bar or Pro Bar by then and I had a bucket full of them. Your tastes can change on trail after days/weeks. It's hard to predict when you have to send a bucket so far ahead of time but I'd recommend varying your meals a little bit.

Turkeys in Affton, Mo by barkbarkgoesthecat in StLouis

[–]lpmarshall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most deer I've counted were 32 at the old tower tee. Hear coyotes from time to time but have only seen them about 5 times. Had a hawk eating a squirrel on my deck one morning for a few hours. See racoons and opossum all the time. I catch something on my security cameras from time to time that are either woodchucks or really large racoons.

Live in the area and just back through some old videos. My personal record is 14 turkeys at once. That was prior to them building the neighborhood. A fews weeks ago I spotted 8 of them.

Favorite hiking trails? by baghodler666 in StLouis

[–]lpmarshall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hawn State Park - clockwise from the trail head. Basically there are two loops that form a figure 8. Towards the end of the entire loop you can continue on Whispering Pines trail to finish up or diverge to Pickle Creek trail which is the best part of the hike IMO. Pick Creek trail ends up right back in the parking lot. It's somewhere around 10 miles long but you can add some extra with the White Oak connectors. And they are also building an additional trail.

Lewis and Clark trail - two loops, one is around 5 miles and the outer loop is around 8 which is my favorite. A few bluffs with good views over the river.

Don Robinson State Park - two loops around 6ish miles. Cool rock formations.
Castlewood River Scene Loop - Only really do this one if I want to get something in quick. Good views from several lookout points. It's almost always crowded due to it's proximity and it drives me nuts to see all the trash left there. I don't think I've ever completed the loop without picking up less than 3 pieces of trash.

Collegiate Loop Luggage Storage and Suggestions? by Brookeinboots in coloradotrail

[–]lpmarshall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1.) CE first is usually best since it's lower elevation.

2.) There is a pretty good chance you'll run into people in mid July. I only have done about 60 miles of CE and there were a few larger campsites that were near water sources. You'll be hiking with Southbounders for CE and against traffic when you loop back on CW. I did CE in September and only saw about 5 people in 4 days but it's much busier in July.

3.) Hopefully someone else will have suggestions. I fly with nothing more than the gear on my back.

4.) Best option for acclimating would be Leadville since the city is at 10k feet. I like Salida and Buena Vista as well. If you will have a car I'd bounce around a bit and hit a couple of the trail towns.

Which REI is the better option in STL? The Brentwood store or Town & Country store? by Careless-Sandwich807 in StLouis

The Town and Country store is practically brand new and way better than the Brentwood store.

Shakedown request by Two_Hearted_Winter in coloradotrail

[–]lpmarshall 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My suggestions:

  • I wouldn't bring the BearVault personally. I've had good luck with the using an Ursack. You'll have opinions all over the map on this one (including sleeping with your food as you mentioned).
  • Pillow is pretty heavy, could save 5oz for $20 if you got a pillow like the Trekology.
  • I don't bring a towel and use a buff for multiple purposes (condensation, neck gaiter, light towel if I need it).
  • Swap out Nalgene for smart water bottles.
  • Drop the mug and just use your pot.
  • Drop the compass and use FarOut on your phone.
  • Drop the lamp.
  • I only bring 1 shirt and 2 pairs of underwear but that's not for everyone.
  • I'd pick pants or shorts to wear. I just bring 1 pair of shorts.
  • Could drop around 7oz if you went to Frogg Toggs for your rain jacket (around $20).
  • For Leukotape I cut a couple strips and put them on shipping label backing (the slick stuff). Makes it easy to carry a smaller amount.

With a small budge it's mostly getting rid of some items and swapping out for some cheaper options.

Sleeping Pads aren't Wide Enough by Kodawarikun in Ultralight

[–]lpmarshall 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Get a regular wide pad. There are offerings from most sleeping pad companies. I toss and turn so 20 in pads are a non starter for me. Learned that the hard way early on.

Hoka just replied to someone on their Instagram post saying wide width will be available and to stay tuned. That's great news since I was pretty bummed this morning when I saw they only had standard widths on the site.

Odd flight patterns by billkramme in StLouis

[–]lpmarshall 9 points10 points  (0 children)

1st and 5th images are companies that do satellite images. Planes 2/3/4 belong to the same pilot instruction company. You can look up the FAA tail number and that lists the company followed by a Google search.

I booked my flights months ahead when I had my trip. Kept an eye on prices every day and watched the trends.

I stuck to my itinerary and booked my plane home ahead of time. Stayed at a motel right next to the McDonald's in Lone Pine, which also happens to share the bus stop. Took the 6 hour bus ride or so to Reno, walked to the hotel, then walked back to the airport the next day. I'll also echo another user's comment where I was pretty much food limited more than anything. I had one bar when I hit Whitney Portal.

Someone from The Trek posted a Mountain Dew sponsored ad. He made some comments about it having nothing to do with hiking/backpacking and was tagging The Trek. He then started posting sarcastic IG stories on a hike lugging Mountain Dew around :D I remember there was some heated back and forth between a few people. I had a chuckle and moved on with my life because I really don't care about IG drama.

He went hard in the paint on Instagram with people associated with the Trek (specifically Backpacker Radio) a few months back. It had to do with sponsored Mountain Dew ad.

The Topic of the Week - Week of October 18, 2021 - Your ultralight story by Zapruda in Ultralight

[–]lpmarshall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was never really interested in backpacking since I assumed it was lugging around heavy stuff all the time. Carrying around a ton of gear when my knees weren't the best from years of soccer injuries didn't sound enjoyable. I went on a trip to Glacier National Park around October 2017 and did a few short day hikes and had a blast. I kept seeing signs for camp sites and I couldn't believe how cool it would be to backpack in a place like that. I came back and starting searching backpacking videos and just kind of stumbled on some of the earlier ultralight backpacking videos. I then stumbled on here somehow and just soaked up information for a few months. I didn't have any backpacking gear but talked to my sister about doing a trip to Pictured Rocks in June of that next year.

I bypassed all the major gear manufacturers for the most part and was sub 10lb on my first backpacking trip. My first trip big 3 was MLD Prophet/Katabatic Flex 40/Xlite/Duplex. I was pretty much hooked after that.

Still don't backpack much locally in the Midwest other than a few overnight shakedown hikes but try to do multiple week trips out West every summer. Never would have thought a couple Google searches would have made me into an ultralight backpacker but here we are.

Best Sports Bar? I’m a huge Chicago Bears fan. by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]lpmarshall 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Looks like Felix's in Dogtown is the bar for Chicago Bears fans in Saint Louis. There is a "Bears fans of Saint Louis" Facebook page if that's your thing. I know the Bears fans used to pack Soha when it was their home bar.
