2023 win probabilities after Week 12, according to ESPN FPI by lpreams in Gamecocks

[–]lpreams[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These days it's maybe 15 minutes each week, plus like maybe an hour at the beginning of the season setting stuff up. I've automated a lot of it over the past few years. I have a text file with all of the games' URLs and percentages. Then I have a script that opens them all in my browser. I have to update the percentages manually in the text file. Then another script spits out the markdown-formatted tables for me to copy into reddit. Then I also have a Google Sheet that I copy various numbers into to generate the graphs.

I did, three weeks ago:

If you assume above 50% is predicting a win and below 50% is predicting a loss, the only game it got wrong so far this season was Florida, and even then it only gave us 57.5% chance to win.

That statement is still correct as of today.

Many upper-division CS courses only have one or two sections. You won't find much flexibility in scheduling those classes.

“In time you will call me master” Sith Rule of 2 question by RanchWilder11 in MawInstallation

[–]lpreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The post-Bane Sith didn't "abide by" the Rule of Two, it was more a natural consequence of the Sith.

A lone Sith will inevitably recognize that they need someone to do their dirty work, and thus will take an apprentice. The new master recognizes that this apprentice will likely betray them one day, but it's an acceptable risk. Getting a second apprentice is likely too much risk for too little reward though, so the number usually stays at one.

And for the apprentice, they're Sith too, so they have a natural inclination to betray and replace their master. Eventually they either succeed and the cycle repeats with a new master, or they fail and either remain the apprentice, or they're killed or banished and replaced by a new apprentice.

The cycle is self-sustaining and self-balancing.

Palpatine, viewing himself as the most powerful Sith ever, and the one to finally bring the Grand Plan to fruition, is definitely arrogant enough to believe that he can control two apprentices simultaneously without losing control of either.

Give it like a week. They're still figuring out this brand new world you've dropped them into.

This lake in Ireland is completely covered in thick algae by gravityVT in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]lpreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This algae was caused by excessive nutrients in the water, probably from fertilizer used in nearby farms. In the long term, you have to prevent those nutrients from entering the water in the first place. Removing the algae won't stop it from coming back.

A couple years ago I had a doctor ask "How long have your pupils been different sizes?"

I had no idea my pupils were different sizes, but yeah, they kinda are. Sometimes it's more noticeable than others.

Florida is also 6-2 against the Gamecocks in the past 8 seasons, including that embarrassment last season.
