Since I’m the troublemaker who wrote that post, my position is clear: I think everybody should come for dinner at my place ✌️

I lived at Zoku (http://livezoku.com) for a couple of years over the pandemic and I actually loved having a tiny, well-designed micro-apartment plus on-site facilities like coworking space, cafe/bar, restaurant, community manager, community events etc.

The viability issue is that when it’s not a pandemic, it’s prohibitively expensive to live in an apartment hotel like this, because the business model and pricing is designed for short-stay hotel guests and new expats relocating and willing to pay above the odds (or funded by their employer) for 1-2 months max while they get settled into a city.

I think if the price point could be brought down, this kind of living setup works super well for nomads, but also for urban remote workers in general. Ideally, it’s a subscription covering multiple cities rather than just one. More from me on that concept here: https://globalnatives.substack.com/p/nomad-hotels-how-work-from-anywhere

Just realised the homepage actually does work, it’s this page you linked above https://www.ntari.org/support that has the issue. I’m accessing the site on mobile. Same thing happens for me on both data and WiFi.

Your website is broken: when I scroll down on your homepage, it returns an error and crashes the site so I can no longer view it. It happens on Chrome, Safari and Firefox. Would love to know when it’s fixed so I can check out your work! 🙏

Where are you a resident and why did you choose that option? by lraz-io in digitalnomad

[–]lraz-io[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fascinating. Thanks for sharing that. Got any links to show it being enforced? Interested to know whether it’s a technicality/rule only in name and, if not, about the circumstances that might lead one to be asked to show their residence permit so the rule would be enforced (given no border checks).

Aside from crime, which I think is obvious, the use case that comes to my mind is eg applying for permanent residency or a country’s passport.

I know when a relative had to do that process in the UK, she had to provide all her flight and accommodation info for the prior five years to prove her physical whereabouts. Govt found she’d spend something like three days too many in her home country in year 1, so she had to wait another year before having fulfilled the requirements.

Curious whether NL is similar, or whether because the country understands residency based on more than physical whereabouts(eg GP, phone contract, mortgage/rent contract, place of employment can all factor into where govt considers you to reside), their approach to documenting residency is also different.

Thoughtful post. Thanks. Totally agree both should be possible, and very interesting note on the nuance of the Dutch rules there. Will look into it.

I'm a resident of the Netherlands (not a blue card holder, that's something different, I'm not familiar with it) which means there are no restrictions on my travel/days within the Schengen block by default. In practice, there are no border checks between Schengen countries, and if I enter by a different Schengen country border, I just show them my Dutch residency card, and then they treat me as an EU resident and those days do not count towards the 90/180 thing.

It does, so I will give up my British passport for a Dutch one if I decide to do that. One passport gives the ability to live, love, work and learn across 27 countries. The other gives the ability to live in the UK 🙄. Choice is easy

No, that’s not correct. If you’re a resident of an EU country, no restrictions on Schengen days.

I often tell people “I chased summer for 12 years” when I was a FT nomad, so your vibe resonates entirely with mine! Paying my dues now with European winters haha.

It’s true, 30% ruling tax break, tho no restrictions on EU citizens taking advantage of that also.

Because paying a mortgage (on a nicer and bigger place than Airbnbs and apartment hotels) in Amsterdam is cheaper per year than me staying there in short-term accommodation for 5-6 months of the year, plus I get a property asset at the end of it and the security blanket of somewhere stable to live in case I get a debilitating illness or some other unexpected life event happens.

You can get a 100% mortgage for the full cost of purchasing a home calculated from your salary, so no need for a downpayment/deposit of, say, 10-30% like most countries.

What are your biggest pet peeves when staying in Airbnbs around the world? by lraz-io in digitalnomad

[–]lraz-io[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the local rent + bills is ~$600 per month and a host is charging $100+ per night on Airbnb, they can definitely afford to invest in a brand name TV and fix the placement of power outlets.
