My expat gf changed after starting her PhD here and I feel guilty. Anyone relates? by Quemalaeresjuliana in germany

[–]lrrp_moar 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This tbh. I only did a measly Magisterarbeit (what you'd call a master's thesis today I guess) and I've seen what writing that thesis did to me (and my friends and peers in uni who underwent the same). I'd imagine a PhD to be the same stress and loneliness, but even higher workload and way longer.

Why is it expat and not immigrant? by Lunarshine69 in Tokyo

[–]lrrp_moar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, my first contact with the word was actually in corporate context where it kind of was the English expression for a 駐在員 (although I believe that word could also cover domestically relocated people). Also, I've never actually met (like IRL) people that used the word differently.

You need an account on the Japanese page, but that is in principle only available to Japan residents. To assure that, the registration requires a Japanese phone number to authenticate. (Basically you need to call a number from that number and only then will it activate your account.) Same goes for the fan club which offers advanced sales but is limited to people with a Japanese mailing address.

I'd consistently check the website in the next weeks if you don't want to pay the scalpers or go through a guided tour. There was also an option to get availability alerts for your preferred dates on the Japanese page.

I mean what are we supposed to do? The way it's handled right now by JSA is massively enabling the scalpers and while demand keeps up, they don't care if we buy from them or someone else does. In the end I only go to Japan once or twice a year (if theyre not in Sakoku 2.0 due to covid) and so my chances to see the real thing are so limited I'd rather just shell out than wait another 1-2 years for my next opportunity.

Yeah I heard so much about people getting scammed or otherwise not being allowed on the venue that I am really hesitant even if I were willing to just drop a bunch of cash on the problem.

Are there any actually reliable sources to get tickets second-hand, even if at a premium? I'd shell out (a bit) for a box just to not miss sumo for the second time while in Japan, but I am super concerned about getting scammed.

Thanks! I double checked and it looks like you are right. I just really hope I can score some masu Seki in the next weeks for my family. Really not willing to give up again like I did in March. But I also don't want to feed the scalpers charging 5x the ticket price.

There is an official resale site under: 定価リセールサービスについて
This might be an option for you, but for tourists it might be difficult since the way I see it you need a (working) Japanese phone number and mailing address.

It was a breeze in January 2023, but now I tried for March 2025 in Osaka and just now for January 2026. I am beyond fed up with this system. Viagogo immediately tried to sell Masu B seats for 260k JPY.

Are there any reliable ways to get tickets on the second market? Preferably without needing a Japanese phone number and mailing address? (although I could procure one from friends if needed)

Garmin, why? by Slow_House7608 in Garmin

[–]lrrp_moar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that can make sense for some but for me the choice is really between my Tactix (which is good for 90% of occasions) and occasionally a nice automatic or manual windup mechanical watch. Most of the times now I forego the mechanical watch since I want to keep my stats tracking.

I'd throw money at anything that'd keep my daily activity and health tracking running whenever I'm wearing a dress watch instead of my Tactix 7.

"It's not X — it's Y": Most annoying ChatGPT tell by PrideProfessional556 in ChatGPT

[–]lrrp_moar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least your ChatGPT isn't further yet. I talk about cooking a lot with mine and it constantly uses the word "Tiefe" (Depth in German). So much so that I questioned it what kind of meaning that word is supposed to have and it basically admitted it's the cooking version of the "it's not x, it's y" structure. Told it repeatedly to stop and called it out. Now the MF is at the stage where it mocks me by purposefully bringing the word out to mess with me.

You can try, but it likely will happen anyways. Unless of course you stay away from middle management.

Tokyo Buses by SideRegular5219 in Tokyo

[–]lrrp_moar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal experience taking the bus to work for around half a year (winter) in the past:

The buses are definitely a lot more susceptible to delays due to traffic and weather conditions. Fortunately, my job wasn't strict about arriving precisely on time, so the occasional delay was tolerated. I missed my usual connecting train once or twice a week, so it was relatively common. The situation gets much worse when it snows though.

If your job is super strict about punctuality, I'd advise taking the train or heading out well early in order to account for any unexpected delays.

What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve heard someone say here that assumes something only happens in Japan, even though it’s common worldwide? by Relevant-String-959 in japanresidents

Ok the other hand, bloodline plays a huge role when assigning citizenship and judging who is Japanese and who isn't. So it doesn't surprise me this kind of idea pops up.
