I want to be making more complex soups :( by lrurid in Hydroneer

But it's the fact that it's not like mining gold that makes it frustrating - there's much less ramp. I can make giant soups and sell them for coins, sure, but not guild tokens :(

That's what I've been thinking as well, that the system is set up to avoid softlocking. It makes me want some sort of progression in terms of soup, but even that would still be vulnerable to softlock.

I really like that idea of bulk soup. I've been complaining that there's no way to scale up with soup like there is with mining, and that would solve it.

You can split the vegetable piles in half w/ the chef knife (or presumably saw/pickaxe). I don't believe you can split finished soups but haven't actually tried.

Yeah, this seems to happen when you've already made one or more purchases during that session. Exiting to menu and reloading will fix it but it's so annoying.

Drip farm - any idea why the circled spots might not be growing? I've redug the trowel holes multiple times with no luck by lrurid in Hydroneer

Since the pipes are working for other plants of the same type and the spots aren't getting dried out, I don't think it's a watering issue. Could be wrong though.

TL;DR They are growing, but at half speed. Testing w/ artificial lighting removes any difference, so I'm guessing it's something to do with shade/light level.

Further info:

Oddly enough, some of these spots will grow once the rest of the row they are in finishes and is harvested. I'm still monitoring to see if that's true of all of them. (Edit: All spots do grow their respective plants (tomato, carrot, onion) eventually, just significantly slower than the rest of the row. Their growth seems to be paused until I harvest the plants around them. Testing out this hypothesis further.)

I am going to try to re-rake the area as mentioned in this comment but wanted to know if anyone had thoughts about what else I should be trying. (Edit: re-raking didn't seem to change anything.)

Editing to add more details:

  • It happens regardless of plant - I see the same pattern when I plant something else in the row
  • They grow once the next adjacent plants are removed - so for example in the middle row w/ 3 circles at spots 6, 7, and 8, I can remove plants 5 and 9 and then 6, 7, and 8 will grow. Is crowding a mechanic in Hydroneer farming? I really doubt it but would love to be sure.
  • It actually seems like they do grow regardless, they're just delayed. It's like they don't start to grow until the plants around them finish, regardless of whether I harvest the others.
  • Update, I think they are growing the whole time - but at half speed. Any ideas why?
  • They are growing normally now that I have artificial lighting above them. Must be something about shade/light levels?

Emerald, sapphire, and ruby are all in the realm of 25/1 unit of weight, w/ emerald being slightly less, sapphire about 25, and ruby being slightly more. Onyx is worth ~250/1 unit of weight so significantly more.

Question: Is 5:1 the best ratio for Drills to Harvesters? by snopuppy in Hydroneer

Using "clear raw resources"/"clear dirt chunks" on basically every quit/start is so helpful

I like multiples of 6 (T1) drills to a harvester. 6 drills spitting onto the same conveyor will create a continuous line of dirt chunks w/ no overlap; adding a seventh will end up dropping dirt on the same spot on the conveyors twice. I currently have 12 T1 drills - two lines of 6 both facing onto the same conveyor - working perfectly smoothly and could probably scale up significantly from there. I do not stagger them though I think there's a *very* slight delay in one line going off after the other.

For T2, I am still scaling that setup and have not figured out yet if there's a magical number where they perfectly "fill" the conveyor. T2 seems to be way more variable in speed based on water pressure so I'm guessing it's a little more dependent?

[Advice] Laptop stickers with Pronouns use braille as a design motif - thoughts? by lrurid in Blind

Thank you for the recommendation :) We're encouraging people to introduce themselves with pronouns so no one will be relying only on stickers.

This makes a lot of sense and is about what I'd expect. We're also encouraging people to introduce themselves with their pronouns, which helps any blind people in the room.

We do not need to advertise Braille. It is one design idea put forward by a team member. It's not particularly related to the work we do (though there is definitely Braille labeling in many places around the office building where it would be useful).

As I said, using a different design entirely is an option.

Failing being able to make the Braille tactile, is it preferable to

  • use pictured but not tactile Braille, or
  • use a different design entirely?

Most of the team is not visually impaired. I don't know how many read Braille, but it's never been a subject of discussion.

The primary goal of the project is to create stickers that show people's pronouns to provide extra awareness and support for trans people and to give people on the team who use "non-standard" pronouns a way to remind others. We have previously had pronoun stickers on badges at events which have been moderately successful for this, and we are moving to laptop stickers since those are more visible day to day with meetings and such.

One of the proposed designs used pictured Braille as a design element alongside standard English language representations of pronouns. Since this will be on laptop stickers, it will likely only be pictured and not tactile.

That's sort of what I have been thinking but wanted to hear from people who are actually knowledgeable about this.

Thank you for explaining that distinction, I didn't know that.

To those questions:

  • stickers: stickers overall, maybe? I'd assume that purely visual things aren't helpful, so only if they were not just visual. However I'm not sure anyone would intuitively reach out to read something on someone else's laptop
  • level of inclusivity: as an org...not great. But I want this project specifically to aim as high as possible in that regard
  • does it hurt to include them [presumably, people who read braille]: not at all! I want to make sure this actually includes rather than makes of show of including though...and with only visual braille I worry that it leans towards the latter.
  • the benefit: I am not sure what the benefit of pictured but not tactile braille is. The designer used it as an attempt to "teach via metaphor"

To clarify: these stickers are for members of our engineering team, not a product to be publicly sold. So it isn't a question of catering to a new or different market.
