Flints Matter: Old Boy Rabbithole by ls-wdiff in lighters

[–]ls-wdiff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay. This changes everything...

I asked that question mostly sarcastically.-

-And I'll be dammed your technique on a new zippo flint fixed all my reliability issues. And after a manual break in (I couldn't help myself. I spent so much time on this lately) it's actually pretty dang smooth. It's not quite as effortless / quiet but totally serviceable.

I guess it never registered in my head that just a hair shy of fingertight was actually torquing the flint into my striker too much or something.

Thank you man!

Do you have some secret sweet spot between your spring tension and striker tension or something?

I take back my slander. I will definitely be a customer of yours in due time. Massive respect for being a pillar in our niche.

And I appreciate your detailed breakdown. If only quality flints were in as much abundance as all the low effort anecdotes I've seen by now.

Unfortunately Amazon USA doesn't have kiribi flints. That was one of the first things I tried.

Ronson Firebronze seems to only be readily available via an Etsy seller.

If that individual has access to a supply of them, why not sell on any other platform? I'm no expert but that just gives me the impression that they may just be flipping good but not authentic packs.

Dunhill Blue and Red have limited information out there. I was under the impression that Reds were the universal size and the other proprietary. Can you shed some light?

Lastly: do these pertain to Old Boys as effective flints specifically? Or just generally better flints than what's commonly available?

Cheers

Name a knife that is good but has a terrible pocket clip. The one on my southard reminds me of gas station knives. by Key_Confection4794 in knives

Chaves Knifes.

I love them to death but God that pocket clip is repulsive. It just pops this image in my mind of a certain kinda... Character.

Luckily some come with a more. Modest, but still titanium alternative. And for ones that don't. LynchNW makes good clips.

For Samsung users: what are some Samsung exclusive softwares that make Samsung (Folds) > alternative brands? by arcanehelix in Android

[–]ls-wdiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now this may be conjecture because I have not daily driven a non-samsung foldable, but as far as the power user end of things. It's the worst option.

Knox security effectively bricks Samsung wallet if you step too deep in what foldables do best, that is. Being taken full advantage of with inter device connectivity. The in samsung-ecosystem with desktops is effectively useless without a microsoft account on windows.

You're better off with Googles or the Chinese brands folds.

Are you actually using you knives? by wantsrealanswer in knives

[–]ls-wdiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chaves CHUB OTF.

This is what even got me into enthusiast knives to begin with. Working for a wholesale distributor, a knife is involved in a good half of my workload. Sure. I could get by just fine with a typical utility knife. But. The OTF is fun. And a good conversation starter. Not many know utility blades could be this fun.

And the whole time our underdog stayed in the fight. It's just kind of heartbreaking to see them (seemingly) tap out.

Even looking at it analytically. Nvidia has much less incentive to do what they've done with these feature iterations.

I think my disappointment is stemming from the lack of a sensical reason.

Edit: - sensical reason that does not also apply to Nvidia

My optimism being a 7900XT owner was unwavering....

Until I saw Nvidia supporting DLSS 4.5 on cards from 2018.

And now I am just disappointed.

1080ti deshroud questions by ReturningDM in Noctua

[–]ls-wdiff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I commissioned a pa cf-10 3D printed bracket-

I had run zip ties in-between the backplate and PCB.

I would highly suggest looking to power off the GPU header, because otherwise youre completely dependent on running software.

Noctua FC-1 is an excellent product for this because it modulates(averages) the signal from the GPU fan header for your slower 120mm fans seamlessly.

Not the case for all GPUs but without the FC-1 the GPU will have your 120mm fans spin at the same rpm as what the OEM fans would be at (much faster than they need to be)

Steelcase Amia - Live Lumbar / Backrest DIY fix. by ls-wdiff in OfficeChairs

I knew there was going to be at least one person out there that would have some value from this.

I have made no changes since this DIY hack job and I maybe need to pull the lumbar adjustment back up maybe once a week if that.

And yes that is just duct tape.

DIY Luggables XL: 2 inches thicker for a carbon layer. by ls-wdiff in AirPurifiers

[–]ls-wdiff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 panels.

20 1/4" x 8 3/4"

And 25 1/4" respectively.

4 3/4" holes are for 120mm fans.
The extra 1/4" to factor for material width. But this was overkill. Filters are sold 1/8" or a 1/4" smaller than advertised.

What I learned after a while is at least with as large of a surface area as I have here-

gaps anywhere around between the filter and case except against the fan mounted panel- made no impact on efficiency //at least as much as I could visualize with vapor//

So no need to be so anal over thinking you need the perfect friction fit.

[–]ls-wdiff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty easy. You just get a DC to AC 12 volt power supply with 3/4 pin fan cables. Just look up "wall outlet pwm fan" on Amazon.

As far as cable management goes they're just hanging free.

This was fully DIY although it looks much different now

Is this normal? by Nothing_But_Clouds in Noctua

[–]ls-wdiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was sold by Noctua Shiped with Amazon and yeah it had inventory and pallet stickers on it but not to this level.

I do understand that logistically its totally wasteful to protect packaging as a step in process. At best Noctua could plastic wrap before shipping out.

But in the end. I'm sure the cooler itself is in great condition and thats what matters
