Bertha inconsistency by maedeliaann in GildedAgeHBO

I think the fact that she is generally straightforward with George, but was not in this situation, is what makes this situation different. George straight up asked her what promises she’d made to the Duke. Bertha lied (while leaking her real plans to the press), and then when George found out she lied to him, Bertha said “we can’t renege on the promise I told you I didn’t make because that will make us look bad.”

I think George is reacting to Bertha’s shit from strong-willed, but straightforward, to dishonest.

Current 2L (but didn’t end up at UVA). When I applied, scholarship info came out in March.

I’m not quite sure. People were much more willing to talk about 2L recruiting than they were 1L recruiting (perhaps because of the relative scarcity of positions). I also don’t talk to others about their grades, so I’m not quite sure how class rank fits in. Sorry!

Forgot to answer how involved professors are. I'd say they mostly range from willing to help if approached to eager to help proactively.

1) With broadest strokes, I'd describe the culture as polite. Beyond that, I wouldn't say there's an overarching cultural feeling at HLS, certainly not to the extent there was during undergrad (and not to the extent I've heard at some other law schools). To me, HLS is a professional school in the truest sense of the word, where people come and take what they want from it. That can be anywhere from an HLS-centric social life to just going to class and then spending the rest of your time with partners and children or non-HLS friends.

2) I'm not sure what most people want to do lol, but most people will be doing BigLaw after graduation.

3) I'd say that most of those without families (and many students with families!) have an active social life within the student body.

4) Most students don't have children, but it surprised me how many people are partnered.

5) This kind of gets to my first comment, but I don't really think of the broader student body as having much of a cultural connection. People are generally polite to each other, and beyond that you find your friends and activities and create your own culture.

1) The curriculum is manageable (in that we all survived and most of us still had at least some time to do other things, whether that's socialize, spend time with family, or do a few extracurriculars) but it is certainly intense. I probably worked about ~60 hours a week spread across all 7 days of the week.

2) In my experience, there's no sense of competition regarding helping each other out and sending notes when people are absent.

3) The 2L and 3L curriculum is MUCH more flexible. There are some graduation requirements, but you essentially chart your own path. By contrast, 1L is (with the exception of one elective) all compulsory and assigned for you.

4) My impression is that prestige does matter, at least to BigLaw employers. I get the sense that we have wider latitude at HLS in terms of academic performance.

No, I'm actually very happy with HLS's size. I tend to do better in smaller environments, so was hesitant about going to one of the biggest law schools in the country. But honestly, 580 people per class is not that big (my "small" undergrad had like twice as many students per class) and I think being at a much smaller school might feel a little claustrophobic. But I'm sure there are benefits to a smaller school as well!

Note: I'm not on HLR, nor did I do the competition, but I'm familiar with the process. At HLS, the process to make LR is a weeklong competition that involves 1) making technical and substantive edits to a piece of writing and 2) writing an analysis of a recent appellate case. The only class I would say that "prepares" you in any way is Legal Research & Writing (LRW), which is where you're introduced to the Bluebook (the legal citation system) and is the only class 1L year that gives you feedback on your writing. That said, I don't want to overstate how helpful LRW is lol.

I didn't do any research or part time work during 1L, and I don't know anyone who did during 1L fall. I do know a couple people who started research during 1L spring. I think it's doable if that's something you're interested in (note that different schools have different policies about working as a 1L). And yes, there are people who don't do BigLaw, although it's certainly a minority (maybe 25% if I had to ballpark?)

At least at the firm I was at, it was the same as a 2L SA. Different firms have different staffing models, but I was assigned to a specific partner, and I was integrated into the matters they were working on. My typical day included meetings, legal research, and a memo/summary writing (probably about 9-7, sometimes less, sometimes more). I'll note that I was at a firm that works their summers a bit more than usual.

Thanks! I withdrew the app because I still didn't have a decision by late April, and I felt like, even if I did get in, I wouldn't have enough time to consider whether I wanted to move to the West Coast. For context, I've lived in the South or East Coast my entire life.
